Please refrain from using too much electricity at peak times as unfortunately we are not prepared to invest in enough capacity. Therefore we reserve the right to cut your electricity supply as you have used your 'quota' of electricity for the day. If you persist in using electricity at peak times we will disconnect your supply.

Actually, it sounds like the way some companies used to work (not sure if they still do) My dad used to work at British Steel and they did have a cap on how much electricity they could use (I think mainly in winter when the systems were heavily used).

The last college I worked at had regular power cuts because too much electricity was being used - a fuse out in the substation would blow and we'd lose a chunk of power (think it was mostly the yellow phase which went)

I've never noticed a cap on my virgin line - I don't regularly download multi-gigabyte files but I have done without any apparent impact. Perhaps it depends on where you are and what the rest of the street is doing??

Not bad but I still think Virgin is better worse upload but better download and ping.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/418860587.png not bad considering I had an online game running at the same time.

EDIT: Ping goes up to about 23ms to futher away distances.

Virgin are mean with their upload speed - look at mine in comparison (I'm about 5 miles from my exchange)

I left Virgin last year because my area wasn't upgraded to 10 meg until late and they stopped matching Sky's prices. I have considered going back - but there is talk of p2p throttling from next year, and you only get the good deals if you take loads of services from them (like their shonky overpriced phone service).

How about you pay for every megabyte you transfer like the price per Kilowatt hour I wonder what my bill would be then! The electricity companies did actually enforce brown outs during the 70's to conserve fuel.

There were also "rota" (scheduled) power cuts by area during the coal miners' strikes of 1973/4 and 1978/9. During the 1973/4 strikes, all tv broadcasts closed down at 10.30 p.m. in order to save energy; the unexpected consequence of having nothing to watch on tv, and going to bed early to keep warm, was a baby boom nine months later!

I have just called Virgin Media about the 2mb to 10mb upgrade plan only to get complete b****x from the guy on the other end. Apparently the upgrade was for only 4mb to 10mb. I mentioned that there doesn't seem to be an option for 2mb bundle deals any more on their site. He said that they still offer the 2mb service. If i wanted to upgrade to the 10mb service it would cost me an extra £5. I said that the bundle deal was £14 and i already pay around £35 -£40 now so why should i pay 3 times more than others. He said the deal was only for "Brand new customers only"

Those words are the shi**iest words ever invented. companies should not be allowed to implement changes and not give the changes to exisiting customers.

Oh and i can't cancel my contract because that department closes at 8. F***ing useless.

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I am definitely looking into Be there now. Just need to know where my nearest exchange is.

Thanks for that. I have never used an ADSL connection before. The site above suggests that my closest exchange is 1.3 Miles away. Is this close enough for a good speed?

checking the Be site it says around 2 kilometers gives around 15Mb. Using a conversion tool on the web it says 1.33 miles is around 2.44 kilometers. So should i get near to the full speed?

Depends on the actual quality and path of your line. I think you would get 12-14Mbit.

The 2Mb to 10Mb upgrade isn't available yet so the call centres won't know about it yet.

One of the things Virgin have been advertising recently is that all their deals are for all customers - not just new ones. Sadly, I now can't find that but I'm sure that the point was that there might be "first 3 months half price" type offers but once that was over, the price new customers pay is the same as the price existing customers pay.

I'd call back and try and speak to someone else or write to them specifically making the point that you ought to get the same deal as a new customer.

Very interesting. It seems then that their customer services is as i thought. They haven't a clue as to what the company is doing. The offers for all proves this very clearly.

WTF Virgin are terrible, why sign up to someone who throttles your line speed. If I am on a 20MBit line then I want 20Mbit ALL the time! They should stop selling what they cannot deliver.

How does this sound?

+1 for that. I love my sky 16mb as I get to use ALL the bandwidth. I can bet money traffic to speedtest.net gets priority too in an attempt to stitch the facts. They already do traffic prioritisation anyway.

Just went to the website posted by @lionsl2005 - it says I have a modem which can handle 10Mbit so they will auto-upgrade within the next few days.

All very painless (except that I'd forgotten my ntlworld username and password but even sorting that out was pretty easy and completely automatic)

So far so good ...
