FN-GM Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 This is the first time i have praised Vista, on the whole it stinks in my opinion but i will give it credit where it is due. My desktop at work is a Vista machine, came in this morning to find it running like a dog. Rebooted and it wouldn't start, it looks like the registry was screwed. I thought i would try a repair of the install. I booted from the Windows disc and it was very easy to sort it out. In no time at all my machine was restored a few days and back up and running. Its much easier to repair a screwed install with Vista, good job MS.
somabc Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Yes the Vista repair is quite impressive, just a matter of booting, selecting repair and it whizzes through it automatically and (for me anyway) normally works

Most Linux installations have some sort of repair option. I'd be surprised if Apple don't provide some as well. Windows XP has a repair console, all server editions do. Disks can corrupt over time, it happens. You also don't bolt various bits of random machinery into your car, and replace the tyres with ones of different sizes, then still expect it to work.

I have to say that saying that vista comes with a repair tool should not be considered a bad thing!!! It mostly just runs chkdsk which tbh fixes most of the problems I've ever experienced with vista, other than people installing Spyware and viruses I used to work in PC world so ive seen the worst of the virus and spyware
MButkus Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I have a Netgear SC101, never update that drive on a Vista without that boot disk. You have to remove the SC101 driver first then reboot, when you do, you mess up the boot drive (blue screen). Put in the Vista DVD and it fixed it. Don't remember if I did update that drive or just left it alone.

Came in handy the other day when my cousins kid with a power button fetish decided to rapidly turn my PC on and off lots of times.

MButkus Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 When you upgrade your software (Vista).. I didn't expect to have to upgrade my external hardware too. This was just a driver update for the SC101. Netgear tells you to delete the driver and restart in order to update to the new driver. I don't have $300+ for a proper NAS. That Netgear SC101 is a POS. Why did you buy something that needs driver instead of a proper NAS?
