Sharepoint Banner Branding

This might just be me being thick, but I have looked about on numerous sites using a google search but I can't for the life of me add a custom banner to the top of my sharepoint page.

 

For example we are using the SIMS Learning Gateway and have set the theme "SIMS Learning Gateway Student 13-19 Theme" for the staff pages but I want to add our own custom banner, but I just can't get it to work. A lot of the sites mention to edit the themes default.aspx but I can't find this anywhere. The imagie the theme is using is "globaltitlearea.jpg" and I thought this is going to be easy I'll just edit the .jpg but its not that easy!

 

Please see below the standard SIMS image that I want to change.

 

Any help will be greatfully received and an idiots guide if their is such thing!

Ah Yes Images, what a pain this is.. i know they are buried somewhere.. i cant remember the exact place at the moment.

 

Anyway something usefu, Maybe..

 

Can you open the site template in shrepoint designer, and then change the image that way? or see the path of the image?

 

Sorry i cant remember the path i took to get to ours, bad memory day today lol.

As to the post you mentioned how do you turn on Office SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure on WSS 3.0. Its not listed in my Site Features.

I know the path to the image:

 

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\THEMES\SLGAge1319\globaltitlearea.jpg

 

But it still doesn't make any difference if the image is modified in anyway.

I think I can see the problem here.

 

You are using a custom master page that is activated by a feature on the site.

 

Open the master page in sharepoint designer

 

Open Designer, Open Site - URL of the top site on your sharepoiunt - folder _Catlogs - masterpages - and you will see the SLG materpage in there. Open the page and you will be able to see the URL of the image and then you should be able to change the URL of the image or find out the where the image is located.

 

I'm assuming that SIMs have done it best practise here BTW

If its branding you're after, this might help you out. Its a Sharepoint Branding tool from Codeplex and could be worth a look.

 

For general Sharepoint utility its also worth looking at Sharepoint SUSHI.

After messing about with the above named .jpg yesterday when getting into school this morning the image had changed.

 

Must have been cached somewhere I guess or the iisreset may have kicked it into action.

Hopefully when i go to do our template, i wont break sharepoint like i did the last 2 times!.. thankfully its on a VM so i'll just take that home one night and have a go.
