Real Player

Hey all,

Hope all is well. We were wondering here if anyone has real player rolled out?

Does it get used much?

We are looking at rolling it out here. Just seems a little pointless for Real's RM files really. I know real has better vid quality but its not *that* much better as WMP. We are getting nagged into getting it as they (teachers) say they have lots of sites using RM files. I find that hard to believe as I thought that real encoder costed money (not 100% sure though) and WMP eq is free.

The BBC uses Real Player files quite alot.

 

Don't forget RealPlayer was the number one media player until Microsoft decided otherwise

 

There is an enterprise version of the player which meant less like spyware.

Also there is JetPlayer or Real Alternative if you just don't the official carp on your harddisk.

Yeh but you have to check the legality of them.

I will not ever intall real player, for any reason. Apart from using an astonomical number of registry entries I stopped using it for the following reason. With real one player, it asks if you would like to sign up to any email news/information. The visible newsletters are unticked, if you scroll down you will find all the ones that *weren't* on screen *are ticked*!

 

Sneaky gits, at least I notice these things. Never used any real software since.

As far as I am aware real player enterprise is free. They just make very hard to find it. I think the same applies to realOne as well.

VLC also works. It's legality is dubious though. It uses reverse engineered codecs.

Nah enterprise costs,

£1000 for 500 clients per year for that. Min purchase is 250 clients @ £500.

If you install Real One it is against there EULA I think.

The way that I understand it is the free player is free for non-commercial use (then you need a license to distribute it). You have to trawl through the Real site to find it but then you can download the installer which will do a silent install.

Real Player is amongst the three pieces of software I loathe the most. It will be a cold day in hell before I install it on any of the PCs at work. If a teacher absolutely has to play RM files, they get Real Alternative.

I'll check the archives of another group but i am sure that you can sign up to an agreement to use the general version in an educational establishment.

 

If you just download it you cannot use it without this agrrement (EULA and all that).

 

The idea is that people cough up for the enterprise version.

I never knew that about real player, if you could confirm please Tony, could be my excuse to give over pestering the BBC for info on trying to get realplayer to work through ISA and the Firewall etc....

Have it installed here for the very same reason!!! Spent a lot of time in days gone looking at various flavours of it - will look again, but fairly certain you can use Enterprise edition. You can also download and use the encoders and Helix servers. I understand the paid for version (which incidently, at the time, Thomas Telford subscribers got a discount for) includes the managment software for the enterprise edition and "more complete" servery bits i.e. variable bit rate streams, and more connections to the server.

 

That is how I understood it, and of course not guaranteed fact

Had a bit of a further dig and the last comments I have to hand are from 2003 with the move from Real Player 8 to Real One (doesn't time fly).

 

The guy who had the conversation with Real basically resulted in an informal message of 'we will not prosecute, but please consider using the proper software which is heavily discounted'.

 

I have emailed a contact at Real to see what the latest message is.

I used to hate it because of all the extra shortcuts and notifiers that pop up with the general RealOne version but the enterprise edition is much better.

Just make sure you do the Custom installation to uncheck the "create shortcuts" rubbish.

You can also get (for a cost) the Enterprise Manager to centrally manage it but I don't bother with that part.

 

The main reason we install it is to prevent staff installing the RealOne version which is as bad as Spyware in my opinion.

Sadly Real is only free for personal use. Which basically means you cant distro it.

I think we fall under:

"You are part of a corporate IT department and want to distribute a custom business focused, centrally managed version of the RealPlayer over a private Local Area Network, CD-ROM or hard drive image to your company employees"

 

Which means you need enterprise edition which has licensing for schools which means ya pay ppl sadly I think.

 

I would avoid Real/Quicktime Alternative as it is questionable about its legality. Jetplayer though should be licensed by Real but still checking that out.

How I would love to be able to use this at our school, unfortunately the alternatives don't allow for the changing of proxy settings for each transport. As soon as they do, Quicktime and Real will be gone so fast...

Just tried the enterprise free copy. How long have you been using it?

Any issues?

I am still trying to confirm it all, we were told (a while ago though) that we must buy it as we are a school by a rep. But who knows now.

It works even better for our mulitcast VC programme than the commercial version. Haven't had nay probs at all with it.

Just put it on my machine at work, seems nice and lite compaired to the other versions I have been using, so I think that will roll at summer.
