stu Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 never had Hydraulic breaks before, seem like a pain to repair, v breaks have to be the easiest thing on a bike to fix so will have to swat up on disc breaks before i change
rolfea Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Hope disk brakes on my bike, and for me these have been the best. Hope Tech M4 Front Brake | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com M4 would be waaayyy to big for my lil hard tail. Got Hayers Stroker Trails on my Stinky though, they're wonderful! never had Hydraulic breaks before, seem like a pain to repair, v breaks have to be the easiest thing on a bike to fix so will have to swat up on disc breaks before i change Never had a problem with my Hydro disc brakes. Every now and then (like every 9 months?) they might need bleeding, but I get my local bike shop to do that. Costs a fiver!
rolfea Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Another quick Hydro tip, as we're on the subject, if you find you have a lot of air in your hoses, and your brake levers pull right back to the grip when you pull them... before bleeding them straight away, cable tie them as far back (as close to the bar) as you can and leave if for a night. For some reason it makes it all better.. unless they actually need bleeding then it won't change alot But it's always worth a try
stu Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 30mph? That's not downhill. That's "slight incline" i was hoping the reason for the crash would be insufficient breaking not going at it full bore
Batman Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Good point I don't get any of this off road stuff anyway. Give me a road bike and I'm happy
rolfea Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I think all of these are also essential... rolfea Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 How about this: are you suggesting someone should ride that? because with all the swine flu going around, I don't really want to try my luck with catching something else
rolfea Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Meh shes a bit grim it's true, I'd rather ride a cock (not a swear word when used in this case) explaination: http://www.soulbiker.com/images/parts/big/1147286040.cock.jpg
Batman Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Have you heard about those mountain bikes made of bamboo? BBC NEWS | World | Africa | From bush to bike - a bamboo revolution
stu Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Have you heard about those mountain bikes made of bamboo? BBC NEWS | World | Africa | From bush to bike - a bamboo revolution wonder how heavy that is bamboo is used in china as scaffolding and most of Asia for construction so i have no doubts in its strength, and £290 seems fair assuming the tested them and there as durable as i expect (the bindings i would be concerned about)
rolfea Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I'd never trust it... what are they doing with the old frames?
Batman Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 (edited) They're making them from scratch, aren't they? I think the point (for me) is that bamboo is a cheap and sustainable material. But then again it's not worth me getting rid of the frame I've got to get one. Edited July 16, 2009 by Batman

But then again it's not worth me getting rid of the frame I've got to get one. http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45988000/jpg/_45988334_jigc.jpg Shows a load of Yellow bikes in the back ground, and the picture at the top of the article has similar components to what is on those ones, so I'm making assumptions that they take everything off those to make whole bikes? But then again, I didn't read the text. Just looked at the pretty pictures
Batman Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Hahaha I didn't look at the pictures much, just read the text You're right it does look like they've got complete bikes there.
RinSewand Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 As far as I can tell the company was set up and made normal yellow bikes for the local community and terrain - and was then contacted by a bloke who wanted bamboo frames - so at a guess they make both - the bamboo ones to export, and the yellow ones for the locals! RwD
a_monkey_hint Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Just ordered myself a specialized tricross sport 09 model on the cycle to work scheme. Should hopefully be receiving it next week - once the cycle to work paperwork gets through personnel.
RinSewand Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Need to get out on my recently self-built trails/mountain bike more often - not had a chance to use it since i started work! nice purchases the both of you. RwD
plexer Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I've been meaning to add to this for a while. I bought the box of bits from ebay that I linked to. First bike I've ever built and I've now been riding it for a few months, the seller was very good to deal with, when it came to fitting the seat post I found the one supplied was too big for the frame so he sent a slightly smaller one. mossj Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Sorry to hijack the thread but it seems a waste to start a new one when theres information already here... I too am looking for a bike to commute to work and having taken in whats been said have settled on one of two Specialized bikes. The commute is 4 miles, with tarmac all the way. I'm looking at a road/racing bike, given that I have no interest in taking it off road or near grass and I used to commute to school on a (very) old road/race bike with 5 gears. Question is would a single speed road/race bike be okay or should I fork out an extra £50 to get one with gears? oh the bikes are either a SPECIALIZED Langster or SPECIALIZED Allez 16
