Joomla Day UK 2009

There will be a Joomla Day in the UK in Maidstone, Kent on 13th and 14th March 2009.

 

Joomla is one of the top three open source content management systems today with an estimated 7 million websites currently powered by it. Everyone with an interest in Joomla is welcome to join us for two days of fun and learning about Joomla and the Joomla project. There will be plenty for everyone from beginners putting together their first Joomla site all the way to advanced professional developers. Three of the Joomla Development Coordinators: Wilco Jansen, Louis Landry and Anthony Ferrara will be there to give you the low-down on what's coming in Joomla 1.6 and its new access control system (ACL). I'll probably be running sessions on Joomla templates and "how to make menus look cool", but if there is some burning topic you would like to see discussed then let me know and I'll see if I can make it happen.

 

Joomla Days are held worldwide on a regular basis, but shockingly this will be only the second to be held in the UK (the last was in 2006!) despite our having the second highest density of Joomla users in the world. They are organised by Joomla community members to support the Joomla community. So come along and meet other people using Joomla for fun or profit. There will be plenty of opportunity to network and pick up some great ideas and contacts.

There are a couple of sessions of direct interest to educational users:

 

"Use of Joomla! in Elementary Schools": Alex Kempkens talks through the practical example of a project he did for the implementation of Joomla! in more than 200 elementary schools in Salzburg.

 

"How academic institutions use Joomla!": Ryan Ozimek talks us through the many examples of Joomla! In use in the Academic arena from the basic Web site to the more complex examples utilising specialist extensions and bridged links with other “standalone” software programs.

Do you know how many academic institutions in England use Joomla for their websites?

 

The reason I ask I am hopefully getting hired at a school district in the states and want to move the district and all the school websites to joomla with the new package and want up to date figures if I can get them?

I don't have any reliable statistics. I just took a quick look at the Google Analytics data for the joomla.org domain and it shows that we had visitors from 51 .sch.uk domains in the last month. Most, possibly all, of those were due to links back to Joomla! in the template footer. So I guess that gives you a very rough minimum figure.

 

There are a lot more Joomla sites in educational institutions in the USA than the UK, but that might simply be because there are more educational institutions there.

 

We currently estimate there to be at least 7 million Joomla sites worldwide in total, if that's any help.
