Two Silly Questions...

1) Where can I enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP to be enabled on all machines by default (I assume this is on the DHCP server, but where?)

 

2) I've amended my group policy to allow the Messenger Service (for Print Manager Plus popups) but this doesn't override the individual machines. I have - this morning - had to manually go into each machine as Administrator, enable the Messenger service and set it to start automatically. Is it possible to do this in the Group Policy (and have I just been looking at the wrong area, I wonder?) I enabled it in the GP under

Computer Configuration-Windows Settings-Security Settings-System Services

but for some reason it's not being picked up. I didn't have any input into the original configuration, so for all I know there could be something blocking it elsewhere.

You could test to see if there is by ticking the Block Policy Inheritance checkbox in the OU. The one that lists the GPOs add remove edit etcetera if that clears it up another GPO is conflicting with it!

 

I'll have to have a look at our server and check about the NetBIOS.

Indie: Why not use the print manager plus user tool that sits in the system tray and gives them the alerts instead of using the messenger service.

Just did a quick google ( not sure if thats right ) short of that I know you can use WMI to enable / disable remote services but that would be a huge pain in the rear !!

When we re-enabled Messenger service we had to do 2 reboots, one to set the service back to re-able the service to automatic and then one to actually start the service. Could be that for you too.

there's a reskit prog called sc.exe where you can remotely enable services. used it not so long ago to disable the message service on all the machines using a net view | find "

I turned this ON [] with the registry add on for AD on the wiki - worked well.

This also pressumes that there is an exception in the end user firewall for the server sending the messages.

you can start services remotely through the services microsoft console component if you really want. Can't be scripted obviously but the facility is there.
