SYNACK Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 (edited) Looks like Seagate have admitted to messing up the firmware on a whole batch of their new drives causing the drives to stop showing the data to the OS and/or lockup for short periods of time while reading files at low speed. Complaints flood Seagate over hard drive problems Barracuda 7200.11 DiamondMax 22 Barracuda ES.2 SATA They have created a firmware upgrade that should fix the problem but you must email them to get a hold of it. Seagate Knowledge Base <- downloads at the bottom of the page I guess a slight increase in read speed was not the only thing that they got from their purchase of Maxtor. Happily I just brought an affected model of drive a month ago so I'v got to check that out at some point. If anyone else has got drives from these product families it would probably be a good plan to check them. EDIT: Looks like they are freely avalible to download now but have not been out for long so could still be buggy. Affected models: Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS ST3750330AS ST3640330AS ST3500320AS ST31500341AS ST31000333AS ST3640323AS ST3640623AS ST3320613AS ST3320813AS ST3160813AS Barracuda ES.2 SATA ST31000340NS ST3750330NS ST3500320NS ST3250310NS DiamondMax 22 STM31000340AS STM3750330AS STM3500320AS STM31000334AS STM3320614AS STM3160813AS Edited January 19, 2009 by SYNACK
RabbieBurns Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I didn't realise it was so many drives. All the reports I read limited it to the 1tb drive! Ive a large array of 750gb seagate barracudas so I will have to check them all out! They have also offered free data recovery too for anyone affected according to here: Seagate isolates 'potential' Barracuda flaw ? The Register
RabbieBurns Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Just checked all my various drives and none of them are on that list
Guest Guest Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Glad i went for WD, against my better judgement i might add. Turns out i was lucky not to go with seagate after all. I wondered how good an idea it was buying out maxtor...
plexer Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I have 8 ATA ST3750330NS in my openfiler and it went back to SCL to have a patch applied to the drives firmware several months ago after a drive mysteriously dissappeared. Has been fine ever since. Ben.
PeterW Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 (edited) I have 8 ATA ST3750330NS in my openfiler and it went back to SCL to have a patch applied to the drives firmware several months ago after a drive mysteriously dissappeared. Has been fine ever since. Ben. That was actually a slightly different issue which as far as I'm aware is not related to the current issue, the problem we had with yours was a firmware issue relating to the drives being used with certain SAS controllers to this day there is still no mention of it on any Seagate support channel or knowledge base but you will find references at Adaptec 3ware etc like here for example Answer a bit naughty really. The current issue seems to affect drives manufactured in/around december 2008, we will of course be be monitoring the situation. Edited January 19, 2009 by PeterW
Geoff Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Yep, RMA'd 4 of my 500Gb Barracuda ES.2 SATA drives here.
PeterW Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Yep, RMA'd 4 of my 500Gb Barracuda ES.2 SATA drives here. Ouch! how many do you have, what was the problem?
Geoff Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 They were part of a RAID5 array in a HP StorageWorks MSA60 Disk Shelve. There's 8 drives altogether in the array. 50% of them died. The Storageworks E500 card in the HP server complained that they had 'Smart Errors' which rapidly progressed to 'Disk Failure' in all cases.
k-strider Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I had a series of raptor 150s die in succession.. when i noticed more than one was exhibiting soft errors I bought a few spare in Good Job!! this is the problem when you buy a server... the drives serials are near as damit consecutive... you almost feel like you should buy one ever few weeks so they come from different batches and are less likely to fail within a short time frame of each other!
Guest richard_s Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Thanks for the heads up. We use a lot of Seagate drives at work so I'll let my boss know about this.
