HDD destruction made easy

I honestly don't know why I didn't do this before.

 

One teenage son + tool kit + pile of HDDs = pile of HDD bits + totally unreadable platters!

 

He's thoroughly enjoyed himself discovering the innards, playing with the spindles, etc!

 

I know I'll have to clear the mess up properly, but I'd have had to do that anyway if I'd been at them with the drill.

 

Sounds like a potential wet play activity for secondary schools!

My son brings home the industrial grinder, cuts straight the middle:D Did about 20 for me last weekend.

 

Trouble is now what do I do with the bits?

I always used to give our dead ones to the ICT Dept "Parts" box for Teaching purposes so they could mash them up, take them all to bits etc was good they always wanted new ones and stuff so having them was handy, and with 300 workstaions and 20 servers over a year you got a few drives built up for them for the next year.

My Son is a bit young to be trusted with a grinder unattended... he managed without power tools.

 

It was like watching him aged about 8 with the lego or meccano! I didn't interfere; just let him get on with it. It probably took 5 times longer than me, but he enjoyed it so much!

 

I have a feeling I'll be finding the bits for months!

Oh what fun, think I'll have a go at taking something apart, might relieve the frustration I often feel.
