(I bought one for school use and its just so much better than the cheap £100 cameras). However, my camera of choice at the moment is a canon d450 with a 10 - 20mm lens and a 18mm - 200mm lens both from sigma. Now that is a "good" camera but still not the "best" but I ran out of money at £1100.
tmcd35 Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I'd second Canon. I have a Powershot A650 and the images a truely breath taking! The thing with digital Camera is it's all about the lens. These days MP are so high they are meaningless - 10MP, do you really have an A0 printer for that image? And Canon are one of the best for lenses (Nikon are also worth a look - Nikon vs Canon any one )

tom_newton Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I have an oldish Canon Ixus, I love it. A mate's wife got the 800IS recently, and I had a go with it on new year, it's an excellent camera, even considering upgrading mine.
webman Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Optical image stabilisation/vibration reduction is quite popular at the moment and it's incredibly useful - try and find one with that on. Forget the D40 - go for the new D90!

It should be noted that the Nikon makes even quick snaps look great even with the standard lens. I dare say his mum doesn't need a dSLR. I'm a Canon fan also, my G9 is awesome but again probably more than your mum needs even though it is classed as a compact. I'd advise buying a magazine and looking at the 'best for £xx' section because most people on here rate image quality over price no matter what.

All the same, the advise still stands regardless of budget. A 8MP Canon/Nikon with a quality lens would be hands down better than a 10-12MP Kodak/Olympus/Fuji/etc with a lower quality lens. Prices should be on par and both Nikon and Canon do some quality compact/budget camera.

Canon G9? I'd say the newer G10 but the G9 is smaller.
