Vista & Orange Broadband Problem

Morning All

 

Apologies if this is in the wrong place. Went to a customers house last night to sort out an issue he had with no Orange broadband connection, checked all the settings, re-entered his broadand username and password, re-installed the Speed Touch modem got it connected but internet explorer would not load up any web page, I could pin Google, BBC etc. I tried shutting down his Norton as well in case that was blocking it.

So connected his modem to my XP PRo laptop and it worked first time straight in!

Does anyone have any ideas what could be stopping the connection to the internet in Vista, it's probably something obvious that I'm missing but any help is greatly appreciated

It may be connected or may not but also Vista would not recognise my Flash drive???

If you could ping the hosts it might be worth checking whether a proxy was configured on his device (thus stopping HTTP requests).

if you click the edit button on the first post and delete the second post you can alter spelling mistakes / typos etc

 

Also have you tried firefox on the vista machine ? If that works then it may just be an IE issue.

was going to try and get firefox on the machine but it would not recognise my USB stick.

Pretty sure that there was no proxy configured on his machine.

We had a similar issue with a different broadband connection and it turned ouot to be a firewall within Norton, kept us busy for a few hours!

To test "browser aside", try and telnet to a known website on port 80 and type "get"; it should give you some gumph and throw a HTTP 400 but at least you can determine it got there without relying on the browser playing ball...

Reinstall and Reset TCP/IP (Internet Protocol) in Windows Vista, 2003 and XP - Windows Vista - Zimbio

 

there are utilities that can do this for you but maybe try that ?

If anyoes interested for future reference, the problem was a remnance of norton that was left on there after it had been installed, got rid of it from program on the following website PC Hell: How to Uninstall Norton

 

As soon as the program had run the interent started working

I had a thread the exact same as this quite recently. All other internet protocols worked just not http. Culprit was Norton then too.

Yes, I forgot to mention that it was an old uninstalled version of Norton that was the issue as well. We had to use the tool too.
