Can access intranet but not WWW

We have a workstation that can access the Intranet but failes to get through to the Internet. I have tried everything I can think of including as suggested in another part of the Forum flushing the DNS. Still no joy. Anyone else encountered this difficulty if so how did you resolve it? Workstation is a Dell optiplex GX270.

See if the default gateway is set correctly.

 

Check the proxy settings are correct.

 

Bung on Firefox and see if that behaves.

Was it previously working and has now lost access, or is it a new station? If it's new, do you have any MAC based access control where you haven't added an allow for the station - e.g on switches/router/proxy server.

 

If you do use a proxy server, have you double checked the settings are being picked up and applied/pointing to the right IP/servername?

If you can, can you ping an external IP address?

 

If you can ping an external IP address try accessing a site using the IP address rather than the common name. If not, what's the full ipconfig of the system and how does it compare to others?

 

If you can access a site with the IP address check the DNS config and hosts file. If you can't, what does the routing table look like?

It seems to be profile related and to just this machine. Logged on as Admin I was able to do everything including downloading Firefox. Logging back on as a user all I can access is the Intranet - ping router and server etc but unable to access anything external. On Firefox it tells me the proxy setting is wrong - but it's not!
