box_l Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 (edited) We have just bought a new product called XIA Server for all our 55 schools. The author is the fastest,(and accurate) coder i have ever seen and very helpful with his support. It is a very capable and powerful AD User population tool that creates/copies folder structures, enables mail accounts etc follow XIAAutomation to watch a demo it also has a password change utility built in that can be given to any member of staff with no worries about compromising network/ad security. Have a look, see what you think. one of the best total provisioning tools I have ever used. BoX Edited December 10, 2008 by box_l Spelling!!!
ChrisH Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 The author is the fatest,(and accurate) coder i have ever seen I dont think they will appreciate you calling them the fatest coder you have ever seen
Zimmer Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Does look rather interesting I must admit, but personally I will stick with the VB scripted method we currently have in place as it's zero cost and works perfectly We currently have a VB script wrote in-house that reads a CSV file and then creates the AD account, adds an Exchange mailbox with relevant student/staff email address and populates the 'Home' folder running on a nightly basis. Plus on a Friday it uses XCACLS to reset all permissions on both the 'Home' folders and 'Shared' folders. For student accounts that have been flagged for deletion it will move their 'Home' folder to a safe backup location and also XMERGE their Exchange PST file to that same location.
sukh Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 seen the demo and look good, wha are the pricing options for this? Also, y not just use the MS TOOLS? They're free and do just that?
box_l Posted December 10, 2008 Author Posted December 10, 2008 Sorry no idea of the pricing options. i will have to ask. the reason for using this over the microsoft tools is that it hugely configureable and there is an SDK avaliable to make your own plugins. it will also send confirmation emails when an automated action has occured. eg. i got a mail this morning everything in red is populated from variables within the app the following user has been created xxxxxxxx.hereford.sch.uk\Pupilaccount by _domain\user using Create Staff Accounts eg. _domain\user changed the password for Pupilname to xxxxx this means that although i have given the right to 2 staff members in the school to create staff/pupil account and to change their password, I know about it immediately you can also populate the created ad user with a description such as user created on by using profile this helps with you audit trail i could go on but there would be so much to describe. try the demo licence, i have some pre-built profiles to get anyone going and will also help with any other issues if i can. OutToLunch Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Plus on a Friday it uses XCACLS to reset all permissions on both the 'Home' folders and 'Shared' folders. Any chance of cribbing your XCACLS reset script for reference? It's been on my todo list forever!
