Ghost CD to USB Stick

Hi everyone

 

After trawling the forums i cannot find the answer to my question so here goes.

 

I currently have a Ghost boot cd at work that has been here since time began (or at least since before me) and no one knows anything about it but it boots any machine with a cd drive and without using PXE and tftp.

 

Tftp server brings our network to a holt so that is no longer an option but we have some machines with no cd drive (stolen, missing or otherwise).

 

I would like to convert the cd on to many usb sticks (and hide them away from prying eyes) but so far i have only found help to put floppy images onto usb sticks.

 

Any ideas anyone?

Is the disc booting DOS or Windows? If the former then there are some instructions here as to how to make bootable USB stick with DOS. What you probably want to do is boot a machine using your CD so you have the right DOS version, then put in your USB stick and FDISK and format it as in the instructions.

 

If it's Windows then you're probably got something like Ulimate Boot CD for Windows and these instructions should help you get it on a USB stick

 

Once you've got it working, take a Ghost image of it - that way it's easy to just put the image on other sticks in the future (you can even make any stick you have bootable and then put all your other stuff on it)

Not exactly what you want, but it's possible to slipstream GHOST into a UBCD4WIN build and then put that onto a bootable USB stick. I've done it, so I know it works, but my memories of how to do it are hazy - I seem to remember documentation being a bit sparse.

I'm sure you've sorted it now,but I have a stick with it on - I believe it 'looks like' a floppy to the machine.

I didn't make it and I don't know how it was done but I could maybe show you what's on the stick if that will help! PM me if you think it will

I have followed the below sofar but the cd has now sumped me.

It boots into pc dos on loading however, the only files on trhe cd are "BOOTCAT.BIN" AND "OSBOOT.IMG"

 

I have tried putting these files on the usb stick to start with but supprise supprise nothing

 

i have tried adding these on top of making it bootable (and even running them from the command prompt afterwards but it dosent want to know).

 

Once again thanks for all your help so far and i am going to keep "playing" and watching this space

I use Ghost booting from a USB HDD, partitioned with 2Gb Boot and the other holding my images.

Send me a PM with your email address and I will email you Step By Step Guide, Files & Tools to boot from USB with Ghost 8 & 8.3, Download a version of Ghost Solution Suite ... It has the option to boot from USB instead of the standard floppy & CD etc. I spent weeks with trial and error to get ghosting to work from usb.

 

Once i got it working i noted down what i did for future. Then got ahold of Solutions Suite Tools and now it has the function builtin.

BOOTCAT.BIN" AND "OSBOOT.IMG" im sure that if you follow my above link and open .bin or .img files that are on the CD with magiciso i think i might have used to extract the data from onw of those two files and put them onto the usb key as extracted files rather than an image file. hope that helped

Thanks for all your help and the post from Gavnic is definatly worth a read all my machines now booting off usb (even the 7yr old ones)

Zak to do a Multiboot, create a floopy boot disc, (Just disc one of two) for the selected driver.

 

Once disc one has been created, copy the driver folder eg "b57, intel" etc go through the procedure in the instructions and put a new confic.sys file in the root of your pendrive. Should look something like this....

Remember of you have already booted of the config file you wont be able to replace the config file for a new one for some reason you have to create a new bootable usb from the start.

Cheers for the links guys finally had a go at getting a USB Ghost pen drive working.

 

Borrowed a pen drive from the Head of ITs office (he won't know its me thats took it )

 

Got two drivers so far, and need to add around 5 or so more.

You should look into fixing this if you get the chance (if only to save you carrying round a USB stick)

i had already seen article 2 hence all the old rubish pc's now boot frm it as well.

 

I was on about multiboot as in

 

1>ghost

2>WinPE

3>Hiren's

4>DSL

ect.
