Photoshop won't save to network drives

Been using Photoshop Elements 2 on the network for the past 5 yrs with no problems. In the summer I moved the majority of shared and home folders to a new NAS server (5TB). Now no-one can save from Photoshop to either their home folder or one of the shared folders, getting the error: "Could not save as as the disk is full". This is patently not the case and users can save the same file to their local drives (except of course students have no access to their local drives...).

Can't find anything about this on Adobe's so-called Help pages. have tried re-installing Photoshop and/or deleting user profile but to no avail. Anyone any ideas or should I call in a priest?

How did you migrate everyone over to the new server?

Is it something silly like everyone has read-only share permissions?

No-one's having any other file permission/saving problems so there's no problem with share permissions. It's only Photoshop doing this.

Incidentally I think used robocopy and then wrote a script to tweak user profiles.

I'm thinking maybe it's either something to do with unc paths or else perhaps Photoshop won't recognise drives larger than a certain size (the network shares are all on a 1.9TB partition)??

Out of interest, have you got any other Adobe products or a different version of Photoshop you could try on a machine? I've heard some hearsay that Photoshop can't save to a drive over 1TB in size, although I can't see how PS saves files is any different to any other application saving a file.

[suggested fix is "fill the drive with garbage" (!)

Most of my users are rapidly doing that for me already but I'll stick a few large files in for good luck and see whether it works.

The "disk is full" error is quite common using Photoshop. Somewhere on Adobe's website is a page stating that they don't support saving over a network, and their explicit advice is to save on the local drive then drag/copy over to a network drive.

Adobe's excuse is:

"Adobe recommends that you not save directly to servers, because writing directly to servers adds a level of complexity to the function of saving."

Funny that it doesn't occur with other files.

I've had this issue at my previous school as well as my current school and have found it unfixable, despite many calls to Adobe support and visits from engineers etc. We just tell the kids to get into the habit of saving locally first - hard for you when your kids have no access to the local drive. Good luck.

Thanks Jack and OutToLunch - you're both correct: filling half the partition with garbage so that its free space is < 1TB has fixed the problem. My Photoshop users are now able to save to their network drives once again.

Shame on Adobe for providing such rubbish support :frusty:

I'd argue that saving locally and copying to somewhere else "adds a level of complexity to the function of saving" to be honest. Maybe it's just me.
