Recommend me a decent video capture card

Hi guys

 

Can anyone suggest a decent video capture card for doing VHS to DVD conversions?

 

I've just been suffering with a Compro VideoMate E800 for a couple of weeks, but it was completely useless and is being sent back.

 

So I'm looking for recommendations - I'm not too bothered if it's PCI-E, PCI or USB to be honest, just needs to capture at a decent res.

Given VHS quality is so low - pretty much any card would do - but if your PC is not very highly specced - getting one with on board mpeg2 encoding would be a good idea, as it takes the load off the PC - I put a HVR-1300 in my media PC (around £60) - and that chugs along fine.

we ended up just buying a video - dvd unit that plays the video and burns the dvd in real time.

How do you find that card - I was looking at that, and found some pretty dreadful reviews online

If you have a mini dv cam that works as a recorder plug you vhs into that record to the cam and then plug the cam into computer via firewire.

Rabbie and Plexer have the best solutions IMHO.

 

1. DVD Recorder. You can get them very cheap and you get a DVD player into the bargain. No computer tied up for the duration. Easy to operate, so anyone can do it.

 

2. Digital camcorder with passthrough. You connect the analogue input the the camera AVin and the camera to the computer via the firewire port and capture staright to the computer. Downside, camcorders with AVin are getting rarer. Upside, you get a camcorder.
