Xubuntu Headscratcher

Hi,

 

We've got a Toshiba Tecra running latest Xubuntu with Xfce managing the desktop.

 

The user put it in to suspend mode and when they turned it back on the desktop reappeared with their icons but minus the top and bottom panels.

 

Restarts, etc have made no difference. It all runs normally but obviously without the top and bottom panels.

 

Are we missing something obvious or has something been corrupted?

dpkg --reconfigure xfce ?

What happens if you run xfce4-panel manually?

Check your XFCE folder for a .old or .bak or .conf.new file, if the package has been rebuilt than it's got nothing todo with corrupted files. Check settings are all correct.

When we click on 'Panel' under Xfce Settings Manager nothing happens.

Sorry yes it is indeed Xfce. I jumped to conclusions before looking at the actual settings. The user has been changing settings and I think also has tried to solve this problem themselves looking at the way the machine is now. I'm just going to reinstall as I've wasted an hour on it this morning and I don't have the time.

I did this to myself once without even trying!

I never found out how to get themback and it was just a quick to reinstall.

I seem to remember that it was something like I had 'turned them off'.

Machine reimaged and back up and running.

 

ME: 'Your files? Just reinstall them from that backup you made on the memory stick we told you to get'.

THEM: 'I didn't'.

ME: 'You, didn't - well that's a shame'.
