Document Scanner & Software

Can anyone recommend a scanner for a new project for a document scanning project. Don't want to spend too much (maybe £500) to enable us to digitise most mail and import into SIMS etc.

 

Also, does anybody know of an import routine to link SIMS or is there only a manual way of importing doc's to SIMS

If you lease your photocopiers, see if they have a network port (or available as an add-on). Most of the newer ones can scan to pdf to a network share - ask whoever handles the copier lease to investigate.

 

Alternatively, something like a HP Scanjet?

I think that toshiba offer a solution that will allow schools to scan a document and using a special connector save it to sims

 

You can also edit the document and remove addresses etc and then save to the differnt doc area's ie medical.

 

You don't need a toshiba photocopier as they do smaller option. The system is called Ecopy as far as I remember

The Ecopy system is very expensive for what it is. It is just as simple in my view, to introduce it as a desktop based scanner and scan to pdf. And much cheaper.

 

We're looking at this at the moment, and are looking at the HP ScanJet range, as I've seen them in use before and know them to be reliable.

+1 for the Scanjet. I use a 5590 and Acrobat for stuff like invoices and a secure store for practice exam papers etc.

We have two HP ScanJet N6010's for this kind of stuff. The HP software allows you to scan straight to PDF and also includes OCR software.

 

We did have a bit of an issue though with the straight to printer option not working as we had too many network printers added to the system (20?) We have a little script that runs instead to remove a bunch of printers, send the doc to the default, then adds the rest back again.
