Does anyone know if Civilisation 2 runs from CD or installs locally? Our head of IT wants to start a club for the kids playing this (it's educational apparently!)but our PCs don't have CD/DVD drives and even if they did, the discs would walk anyway!!

I believe the version I had required the CD play even during a full install. I think the wonders of the world videos and music are always read from the CD. Probably a NOCD patch somewhere but then theres the legality issue.

Have you got the play the world edition? it allows for multiplayer games on Civ 2

Does Civ2 even run on Windows XP? I seem to remember (twas a while ago) the game never loaded.

I've definatly had it working on my laptop and on my moms PC both are running XP. If you are purchasing the software I'd recommend getting Civ3 it's loads better and there was definatly a NOCD patch somewhere as I had it installed on my laptop for a while to play during lunch breaks.

No legal issues if you own a copy of the program. Same with copying DVD's as long as you own the original you can.

That's the only reason gamecopyworld and gameburnworld .com have stayed open for all these heres, they explicitly only allow download if you own a license copy ;) However its not used like that, but at least they've covered their own legal implementations
