XP Wireless Profiles

Afternoon Guys,

 

Got a quick question. Do you allow your users to take their laptops off site to use at home? I ask this because I need to get XP to remember two different wireless profiles. One with the WPA key for work and one for their home network. Is there an easy way to do this? We have been using the Intel ProSet utility but have started to run into issues.

 

Any ideas?

We do yes. We simply add our settings by going onto network connections > right click your wireless connection > properties > wireless networks tab > under preferred networks ADD the settings that you want in this case work settings. I'm not sure how many profiles you can add but a good few at least

afternoon,

 

we let the teaching staff take their work laptops home to use on the internet wirelessly. Haven't had much trouble using the built-in windows wireless utility. Connected it to our wifi at work, then let the user add their home wireless and it connects to the one available at that time.

It must just be our users then

 

Because whenever I have shown them how to do it they go home and epically fail to make it work. I'll be damned if im going round their houses so they can play online games

If they are still having a problem connecting to their home wireless, show them how to make sure that IE is not configured to use a proxy (as you probably have configured at school). Tools> Internet options> connections> LAN Settings.

This causes problems for our home users.

Tell them to go on view available wireless networks, double click on their network (If they even know which one it is:doh:) and tell them to put their key in. Sky have their keys printed on the bottom of the router "Handy". If all that fails tell them something slightly technical to scare them off it usually works for me Edited November 4, 2008 by Mauri

Tell them to tick automatically detect settings.

Are they set as power users on the laptop, or have anything like local admin rights?

If they don't, they may not be able to link up to a new network.

 

Give them admin rights on the laptop, then lock them down the following day.
