Controlling the Internet

To control the internet in a classroom [see homepage text] you need Browse Control from Codework. Brilliant piece of software that does exactly what it says. Teacher logs on to teacher PC [ha! that's the hard bit] then decides internet ON or OFF. Can control individual machines. Whitelists also possible. We have it in every ICT suite.

How much does that cost? And what other products could you buy for the same price with more functionality, say NetSupport Manger with the NetSupport School components?

My apologies for not seeing the earlier thread. Havn't got to them all yet.

 

We have had no instances of the "little darlings" circumventing it via Explorer rather than IE. We suspect it works by re-directing to a null proxy server in the background. You'd need to ask Codework re pricing http://www.codework.com but I can say its priced in blocks of machine numbers. You buyproduct, then if you pay the annual maintenance you can upgrade to any later version within your annual timescale

I looked this too and its really great especially tht it now offers the ability to inlude sub groups and the application blocking is realluy good. We tested this out and works a treat!. Not badly priced either i think.

Hi All, New the the forum so will not be aware of many of the posts. We use a firewall with rules set up to contol the access to the internet in each of our main computer suites. Ok staff have to ask us to switch the room off but it is infallable.

Censornet is free and does all of the above and more [exept aplllication blocking AFAIK]. There's teacher level access where you can block web access by pc, room [group of pc's], user, user group, and can be timed/, permanent etc etc. There's stats to drill down into, whitelists, blacklists too.

AD integration is built in - pulls users off the domain. Scans the network as well for machines and adds them automatically of course. checks also if vnc is installed and that's also available from the user front end - which is a simple web site.

Just trying this out so there maybe loads more to it.

New version due out after Christmas as well which will have many new improvements Im currently playing with my own home brew at the moment though due to the fact it's a real pain to get the raid adaptor working in the Censornet distro on the new server I have .
