speckytecky Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Seeking help please folks. I'm not sure if this is the right part of the Forum to place this question but it seemed OK to me. Recently our RM SmartCache2 which served solely as our proxy and Espresso box was replaced by what is described as an Expresso Linux server. Since the changeover we have experienced problems with video clips playing on some computers. All seem to play OK on our new Fujitsu Siemens workstations but on some (not all) of our Dells video clips refuse to run. The Espresso Support team were asked to look into this on Monday but so far haven't even acknowledged the web request. In the meantime I think I have identified that the problem resides in the settings for the Windows Media Player. Adding in a specific proxy and exception for each user on each individual machine seems to enable the player. Anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions on how to work around the need to set each user on each workstation on this?
craiglay Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Are u running the Equinet Cachepilot now then? I have them in my schools running as the proxy and Espresso server. I have issues when the client computer is running IE7, all I get is the red cross in a placeholder. If I double click it (as an admin) I get prompted to "use Windows Media Player plugin" and it seems to work. Clients running with IE6 are unaffected. My clients are also setup to exclude the imediate subnet from the proxy. I'm looking to set IE7 to allow the plugin for all users, as it seems to be a per-user setting (understandable but annoying). Andie Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 We had the Linux server installed in September, and no one has so far reported any problems with video clips. Have you tried ringing Espresso Support. I usually find that helpful, and probably it will be quicker than a reply to a web request. Would you be able to set the exception up in Group Policy? I'm fairly sure we have an exception for local IP addresses set up in IE across the network, but not sure if it is per user. I'll have a look and feed back if it is. 1

Craig No it's not a Equiet Cachepilot. It's a nicely speced Stone PC. All ours are IE7. The other strange thing being that on some non network PCs i.e. teachers notebooks running interactive whiteboards they initially fail to pull up the Espresso homepage even though it's set as default. To get round this I have to overwrite the default homepage with exactly the same detail then it's OK!
firefighting Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 If I understand your problem and it is the same as ours, I places an exception in GPO. We have Websence server for internet filtering. Espresso Equiet Cachepilot had to bypass the filter to allow smooth display of video. HTH 1

Some networked and non-networked machines starting bringing up a blank page initially, but cliking on refresh brought the page up. I have now changed the shortcut; previously we have used the whole ipaddress/espresso/modules/index.html but now I am using just ipaddress/espresso. So far so good. Did Espresso ask you to change to the Linux server? If so, I didn't realise we had a Stone computers box. Anyway, the GPO setting for proxy and exceptions is in User Configuration. We have Windows Server 2003 and are running IE 6, so it may be a bit different for you. The setting is in our domain policy, but I guess you can put it where you need it. It is at: User Configuration>Windows Settings>Internet Explorer Maintenance>Connection Proxy Settings. Did you try ringing Espresso? 1

Our SmartCache2 was at the end the period they would offer support for and even though it was running pertfectly and doing the job very well replacement was the only option on offer. Yet to ring Espresso on this - I thought I'd try their web based support first as that always worked very well when support was through SWGfL. Oddly I think it's all part of the same team anyhow, or am I wrong?
