I've been looking at thin client hardware today. For what they are, they just seem obscenely expensive. I've been quoted about £220 for an HP Compaq model (The t5170) and for an extra £60 you could get an entirely new PC. I've also seen a Wyse model for about £100 which seems more reasonable and Neoware ones for about £130. On the opposite end of the scale I was looking at Sun ones for kicks and the one with the integrated 17" TFT was something like £1200!

 

What do people here use? Recycling existing PCs for this project isn't an option as all the ones which are in line for recycling are all massive and really grotty looking. This room is supposed to be a "flagship" room so it looks to look slinky and the stations can't take up a lot of room as space is very limited. Even shuttles would be too big.

Ric was sporting some nice HP ones at the conference. I think he said they were about £125 each for the linux based ones and more for the Windows CE based ones.

ps. ones we get are 1GHz with 256MB ram - so they can be used as semi-thin linux clients. compare 233Mhz for £200 wyse terminals that can do nothing but thin client and are PITA to upgrade

@Norphy: The model they quoted you on is the top spec with and is basically a low-spec desktop box (btw the model number should be t5710). You want to be looking at the t5125 and the t5520.

 

If you were at the conference you will have seen the guys from Oliis - they can do you a good deal on either of these. The t5125 is the Linux based one and is more than adequate for most things. If you are Linux minded you can even install your own mini apps ;)

 

The HP ones are not the cheapest but they are very good quality and they look nice (especially next to a AG-Neovo E-17B) ;)

 

If you are starting out and not really sure if it is for you, convert an old Celeron 400 or something using Thinstation. Also speak to 1st Technologies - Student gets offered second-hand terminals all the time and you can probably save a good £30 a unit!

I like the look - any idea how much they cost?

 

There not cheap but I think not bad value some Prices here

we're using a whole bunch of things:

 

HP thin clients, Compaq ones, old p4 pc's and 100 laptops that we got from rm for £50.

 

the hp & compaq run bespoke spoftware that connects to our terminal services enviroment.

 

the old laptops and pc's use a custom build of thinstation :)

the jack pc is an incredibly cool concept , if anyone wants to take a look i have one, only thing is that they are very expensive when you roll in the power over etherent requirments, hate to say it but im an independant thin client person and having had experinace of Chip PC, Relysis, Compaq, VXl ect , I have nothing but praise for the Ijel linux units, never ever let me down
