DNS problem xp workstation

Got a workstation that wont ping domain names but will ip addresses

nslookup on Google works comes back with ip addresses and aliases.

have tried both manual set ip and dhcp set still same

my laptop plugged into same router is fine (i am typing this on it)

ping and tracert cannot resolve address.

also done repair on lan connection

Any ideas??/

Check the LAN IP settings on the machine for DNS, you can set this locally.

Also check the "DNS Suffix for this connection" box within the Advanced TCP/IP Settings tab.

Yes i have checked those and are all identical to my working laptop.

but tried to add new nic would always say cable unplugged

tried to add wireless nic see network connects then disconnects immediately

I have scanned this for viruses as a slave and under its own steam.

tried a system restore as well

running out of options now anyone got any ideas??

I would check the local "hosts" file on the PC just incase there is something funny going on in there.

 

You can find it in : C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

 

Sometimes things can get added in here that makes ping do funny things.

I will assume that when you add the new nic that the drivers went on OK?

 

If the PC is not seeing the NIC then there is a hardware issue here that needs sorting, I see you did a system restore, you mabye faced with a complete vanilla (clean) rebuild

Hosts is clean nothing added

new nics did install fine

now managed to get the wireless one connected but same issues

that rules out hardware problems on nic.

Been right through system uninstalled everything not needed but still same.

There is a lot of software installed and folders of stuff all over the disk otherwise i would have done a clean install .but not going to be an solution i think.

When you select DHCP to assign an ip address do you get one from the router?

 

If you do what is the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and are there any DNS servers set?

 

If you do get an IP then can you ping google?

 

If you can can you access google via the web?

You don't have a reverse lookup zone on your DNS server ? If so try deleting the entry for the rogue machine then run a repair on the NIC - it should release/renew IP settings and re-register on the DNS server

this machine is at home so only thing it point to is router and router is gettting dns from isp

other machines and an xbox all work fine just this one.

Have had this problem - fixed by turning off windows firewall
