mikeymike Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 just wondered if you allow your students to have desktop backrounds and if so what is classed as a inappropriate picture, ie half naked lady, gangsters, weapons??
pscott Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 At my previous school I designed a wallpaper incorporating the school logo. they can't change them. But we would put different ones on at christmas and end of term with countdowns on them! Kids seem to enjoy the fact they were different so didn't bother trying to change them after the first week
mikeymike Posted October 7, 2008 Author Posted October 7, 2008 yeah im quite close at the mo to locking out the desktop option as more and more pics that are very much border line are appearing. will be a shame cause i like it to seem that having their own kind of personalises their account a bit more.
elsiegee40 Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Fixed wallpaper here. Different for staff and children (primary age). Only one teacher has questioned it and I 'blinded her with science'... = told her it wasn't possible
Sylv3r Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 No they can't change them here. Different wallpaper for staff, students in each year group and administrators. It allows the member of staff to be able to see instantly if any student is logged on using someone elses account or to see if a member of staff has left their computer unattended!
powdarrmonkey Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 In my previous, I had a student design a school wallpaper and engineered a matching GINA for the complete look. They got a (slightly) festive Christmas change, and occasionally a Tux when I was testing something, but they couldn't change them. Same here, but the wallpaper isn't branded, just pretty. Different colour schemes for user levels.
firefighting Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 ditto here but we add Active Desktop with MTN school news page.
Talorin Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 As with most others we have a standard background that they cant change. One for students, staff, adult ed ect.
Irazmus Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Students all have the same background which I change every half term and for special occasions (when I remember). Staff are free to set their own since it keeps them happy. Windows chrome is used to denote user levels. Luna blue for students, Luna silver for staff, Luna olive for admins.
flyinghaggis Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 (edited) We use a fixed background for both staff and pupils here. Saves having to worry about any issues arising from offensive/unsuitable images on users screens, the associated bandwidth/storage for them and any technical issues like slow logons caused by large desktop background bitmaps. We get a few complaints from some quarters but so far SMT have backed us up as they can see the problems it could potentially cause and the time it could waste for no real benefit! Pete10141748 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Our basic account setup has a blank black background with Silver taskbar. We dont have the wallpaper "fixed" per se - the students can change it, but they are all .man profiles so the changes dont get saved. If any of them do change them, they learn quickly that the change isn't saved and give up. Staff can change the background if they like, most use something based on the name of their class (either a Tree, a Mammal or a Bird).
