DNS error on a mult-user desktop

I have tried everything but cannot put my finger on what is happening here. I have a Windows 2000 (SP4) desktop. When most users log on to the NT4 network they can access our intranet (running on a Win2k server). When a specific user logs on at the same client, he cannot see the intranet and this error appears in IE6:

 

"The following error was encountered:

 

Unable to determine IP address from host name for intranet

The dnsserver returned:

 

Server Failure: The name server was unable to process this query.

This means that:

 

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.

Check if the address is correct. "

Have you set up your 2K server to run the DNS service or does NT 4.0 fulfill this role. Remember that all 2K\XP varients require DNS to work correctly.

The entire network has a single internal DNS server. DNS works fine across the entire network, which runs from Win98 to XP (clients) and NT4/Win2k servers. It is just this one machine with the one specific user profile, that refuses to see the intranet, when every other user on this client, can.

If you are saying that it is the user profile that is the problem, the quickest solution might be to delete it and create a fresh one. If this is not realistic, check closely the Internet Explorer settings against a working user profile, particularly the proxy settings / exclusions.

 

What is the URL being used. Try retyping it carefully (make sure no spaces where there shouldn't be!)

 

If you have roaming profiles, can the user of the profile log on to another PC and access the site succesfully?

 

Is there a HOSTS file on the PC with weird permissions on it?

Have you checked to see whether the ipconfig is static or DHCP.

 

If it has to be static then make sure that DNS fields are correct.

Having reread your original post, could the user specific nature of the error be something as simple as the wrong proxy value?

 

When you say intranet do you mean a website hosted on site? Or generically to also include shares on file servers (i.e. HTTP or HTTP & SMB)?

 

If it's an internal website then you may need to be more specific about the exclusions to the proxy. This is on the advanced dialog box of IE LAN Settings.
