okay, and where is the AP in relation to the laptops? is there much in the way interference?

Personally I've always found the higher spec linksys gear to be very good. but if you expect wireless to be taken up more in the future it might be worth pushing for a managed system

Roaming profiles + wireless... sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen

Don't know about best but i can happily recommend the HP Procurve AP420s, we've got 4-5 of them and the range and speed seems pretty good

We have these throughout the school but I can't confirm if they are any better than anything else available on the market. I can however say that we have had no issues at all with them and reguarly keep the firmware up to date to resolve any possible issues they may be even if we are not suffering from them.

I'm not sure what the range is like on alternatives of the same price range but it definately seems to slaughter the cheaper option, when i first started here we had awful dlink £30 jobbys which were TERRIBLE, so I would say the procurves are certainly better than anything you'll get for a low "home" style budget, possibly making them worth the extra

Main reason for us buying them though was the management through procurve manager as all our switches are procurves
