Internet Information services - IIS

Can someone tell me what it is and what it does?

 

Not really that familiar with it, but keep coming across it. Wouldn't mind a personal opinion.

IIS?

 

Web server in WinXP/2003, does most things including ASP/ASP.net etc.

 

I don't use it, preferring Apache personally. However, it could be in my future..

It's a web server, but in Windows it forms part of the Application Server thingy, so that may be where you've come across it. It'll usually look after itself pretty well.

If only! You've got to buy a copy of Windows Server to run that (or I believe a cut down version is in XP Pro). For a home user thats a £400 upgrade (alright about £150 for vista business upgrade). Seriously can't be a poor man to use IIS, stupid maybe, poor no!

 

Apache is free and runs a treat on XP Home (or Vista Home Basic). In fact real OS's (MacOS, Linux, FreeBSD) usually come with it pre-installed.

Due to 'standardizing' our network we use IIS instead of apache.... i hate it with a passion!

 

programs that are supposed to automaticly set them selves up with IIS NEVER EVER work properly straight off the install which drives me nuts.

 

When its working though its fine, its not unstable or problematic in anyway as far as i can tell, its just the inital getting it working which is an issue

I use both IIS and Apache on a regular basis now.

 

Apache is abit more superior to IIS, but then IIS is better if you want to protect a site using AD & security permissions.

 

Also IIS can be a pig to setup with PHP, but once you have done it a few times your ok.

 

I haven't really looked into IIS 7 i believe it works well.

...IIS is great, works very well, easy to setup, runs nice and fast for me and the use of it I have. Can't see what all the fuss is about tbh

Lots of Microsoft products now use IIS including,Exchange OWA, Sharepoint System Center Configuration Manager (SMS4) so if planning to use those or any of the other many Microsoft software titles then IIS is essential. I use it for everything except website hosting that is all Apache.

 

Personal I believe in the right tool for the right job and trying to make any software do something its not the best at makes no sense
