Email solution

We've had an incident in school where some pupils have had a selection of emails filtered which they are all denying they sent.

 

As we currently get our email solution for pupils from the SWGfL, we likely aren't going to be able to find out which IP address was logged in and when - which is somewhat of a requirement now with the new data protection rules.

 

So, I have had mentioned to me that I should look at a different solution.

 

This solution could either be hosted internally or externally, but the issue i have is what software should I run? What filtering software? etc...

 

I have a good grounding in running a postfix based mail server with squirrelmail or horde but i've never needed to filter based on emails going *out* from an address.

 

Any suggestions?

We use Zimbra with CyberNerd's bad word filtering modification - it's on the EG wiki.

We use sophos pure message. Simple to use and does the job perfectly.

Cheers, didn't think to look there. One question about the script. When it filters an email, does it stop the email being delivered to the original intended recipient and does it bounce an email back to the sender saying why it was blocked?

By default it does not deliver the message and sends "your message was not delivered" back to the sender. The script is entirely customisable though so you can get it to do what you want.

 

Zimbra also supports what it calls 'legal intercept' which may be useful for tracking certain problematic students or those who are cause for concern - Legal Intercept - Zimbra :: Wiki

Does that do scanning of outgoing messages - ie. does it allow filtering of messages by pupils to ensure they aren't swearing at each other? The site isn't much help - it just seems to show that it is a spam filter/virus filter box for incoming email.
