I just tried the new points system for deciding if foreign workers are qualified to work here, and surprise surprise I failed!

 

I always thought the introduction of Citizenship to the national curriculum was a bit wishy-washy - if it'd be me designing the course it'd have been a pass-or-fail exam, with the failures being given a penknife and a loaf of bread and put on a ferry to Greenland...

 

I made the cut for Canada though!

 

Me too! Yay for us! Let's ditch this joint - Vancouver, here we come!

It's interesting - playing with different settings, I found if you put anything less than a Degree it seems to fail...

 

It's a bit ageist as well. 32+ = 0 points :mad:At 32 I didn't think I was past it yet :(

Without a degree you are not getting in!

 

You must score a total of at least 75 points for age, qualifications, experience and earnings known as attributes. The points available are:

 

Age = 5 - 20

Qualifications = 30 - 50

Previous earnings = 5 - 45

United Kingdom experience = 5

 

The points awarded for qualifications

 

The points awarded for qualifications are:

 

Phd = 50

Master's = 35

Bachelor's = 30

 

Unlike our Highly Skilled Migrant Programme, a Master in Business Administration (MBA) is not a separate category under the points-based system, so you cannot rely solely on an MBA qualification to meet the requirements of the highly skilled worker category.

 

However, you may be able to use your MBA to score points as a master's qualification as detailed below.

 

Points are only awarded for one qualification.

Woohoo - I 'passed' on everything but age - looks like it's official that at 44 I'm too old now. I wouldn't want to work in the UK anyway....sh!t I forgot, I already do....

Wow, I fail the UK one by 15 points - the biggest factor was my age at 30. Glad I was born in the EU :)

 

Did get the required points for Canada, well got a whole 3 extra point above the minimum and that with my wife also (not sure if having a wife/partner affects the score).

I guess its due to the fact that at 44 you have almost no chance of paying more into the system then you will take out once you retire.

 

im glad they are starting to take it seriously, but why on earth is it so dependant on uni education? Passing uni doesnt prove anything these days, experiance and specialist qualifications are far better.

Letting any tom, dick and harry in without looking at the long term effects. And dont tell me its good for the economy as even our foolish govt. have had to admit they were wrong.

Well. they got a lot of things wrong......this govt. is all about cocking up and then knee-jerk u-turns to save face.

 

And with unemployment set to go through the roof and sterling not looking as strong against other major currencies because of all that govt. borrowing and interest rate cuts, then a points system is moot given economic circumstances. For those with the skills and experience to enter they may find that there are more agreeable destinations. Who knows ?

 

Maybe the promise of 20% off at M&S this christmas will persuade them to park up here......:rolleyes:

Passed for canada allthough that test is based on 2003 pass level.

You bringing your family mate? Do they fly to Canada from Norwich? I'll book the tickets, you get some job interviews sorted. I'm too old and under-educated for the UK by the looks of things, but flew through the Canadian scores.

My eligibility is questionable. I either just hit or just miss depending exactly where the end of this year's income falls.

 

Based on last years, not a snowball's chance in hell.

Thank god I'm a Commenwealth Citizen (Australian) with a British mother so I an entitled to 'Right of Abode'. I am also eligiable for registration as a British Citizen as per UK Border Agency | Can I register as a British citizen if I was born before 1983 to a British mother?. But the cost of doing that to the point of getting a passport in your hand is about £600, so haven't done it so far. Used to be cheaper at £180 but at that time Austrailain law prevented me taking out another citizanship. Almost as soon as that was changed in 2002 the UK government put their prices up...something about user pays I belive! More like trying to put people off! :censored: Edited by eduabncs
