hello folks. our server is win 2003 and xp pro workstations, my question is can i add a laptop that has vista home on it to the network so updates can be installed.

i am under the illusion that most of the network functions in home basic are disabled, but you should be able to use the network to supply an internet connection for updates.

well, its the same as xp home and pro, the only reason to buy pro was to get domain access.

 

 

However, if you just wanted to get internet access that would be possible

Are you talking about Windows updates? If so, why not just plug it directly into the switch that sits behind your gateway?

ive just simply put in a network cable and presto can get on the net but ye no shared network.

Not sure about Windows Vista, but with Windows XP Home you could authenticate to a single domain at a time - i.e. you couldn't have your XP Home machine managed by a domain controller, but you could get your PC to connect to network-based shared folders, as long as you only connected to folders controlled by one domain at a time. In other words, you could get a teacher's home laptop and mount a network drive to point to a shared folder on your network.

You cannot add XP home to a domain. I just bought an Asus EeePC and discovered I can connect to the network and access my home drive (h:) by mapping a drive to it but the whole point of home is that most normal people do not need to login to a domain at home. A lot of the networking functionality is simply not there in XP Home. Never buy school machines with XP Home on unless you plan to use a select agreement or school agreement license to upgrade to pro.

your better off just setting it up to connect to ms updates.

You can still gpedit.msc and configure update settings, when pointing to local update server instead of dns canonical name use the IP address.

 

http:// 192.168.0.0 etc. Same applies for Outlook, set it up and supply and IP address instead of servername.

use the local gp to tell it to use your WSUS server (if you have one) to pick up the updates, if its pulling the IP from your DHCP it should be told where the DNS is, if not as amentioned use the IP address where the WSUS resides in the 'specify intranet Microsoft Update location' field found in Computer Config > Administrative templates > Windows Update

I believe there was a way to add xp home to a domain though. It involved replacing files which I think breaks EULA etc but I am sure people had a way to do it.
