Smoothwall For VLANS/Routing, DHCP and DNS

So I've got some new Unifi kit arrived and I wanted to take the oppurtunity to move from my flat network to a VLAN Structure. End Goal is I want the Smoothwall at the heart of my network with one cable to handle all connections to the Smoothwall

 

I'm struggling to get any clients out to the internet if they are connected to the new VLANs. I have checked the Firewall rules and the VLANs are part of the internal networks. I do get a DHCP address. I wonder if its some sort of DNS issue. I've also tried putting the new networks and subnets into Routing ----> Subnets 

 

Would appreciate any advice people can give.

can you ping the smoothwall?

 

have you setup a proxy for the vlan?

We had some of these problems before when i tried to use our unifi gear as a L3 system back in the early days - i think its something to do with VLAN 4040 you need to make the smoothwall aware of it for vlans to be able to have internet access. could be wrong however as this may of changed

Is the router that smoothwall connects to aware of the networks on smoothwall?

 

Routers do not forward traffic unless they know where to forward it too, whilst the route out would possibly OK the  return traffic may not be able to reach back to the client.

 

Try a tracert to 8.8.8.8 and see where that stops. i.e. does it stop at the smoothwall or does it go anywhere beyond that. Feel free to post the output but if you need to put random IPs but let us know what they represent. A diagram might be usefull too 🙂

 

A DNS issue can be ruled out by pinging www.google.com and see if it resolves to IP on a client 🙂

An idea of your structure would be good too.

 

I have found it useful to keep the Smoothwall out of the main structure, as a spur heading out.  So all our switches have their gateway set as the core switch, the core switch has it's gateway set to the Smoothwall, Smoothwall's gateway set to the edge router.  This way all traffic gets funnelled towards the exit.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I got it all working. I think I found the issue was I had forgotten my Unifi Controller made a default VLAN which was then latched on my untagged Management VLAN on the Smoothwall which ended up conflicting with the seperate MGMT VLan I had made in Unifi. All working now and I have a very happy 10GB Network.
