Sharepoint drive sizing

I want to get feedback from other schools who have gone fully SharePoint for file storage

 

we are considering the switch over the summer (either sticking with on prem AD or going full Intune) , however we do have slight reservations about disk storage, we still have some PC's with 120gb drives and quite a few 256gb drives around

 

what has everyone found to be the "minimum" for both single user devices and shared devices, with storage cleanup settings enabled , but not causing a painful experience for users?

 

we have probably around 2-3TB of shared drive data, but i suspect a lot of this is old and rarely accessed so would just remain cloud only

we are encouraging use of the teams and their storage space for departments, I don't know of a limit from the tenant storage pool. Also an allocation of 50GB is the limit for users with A1 licences from the pool. 

 

I have a 10GB network share limit for staff and 5GB for pupils. (some apps can't save to cloud directly) (corel, fusion, affinity, thonny) Can't see (non-cloud storage) going away entirely.

We're fully SharePoint. A standard 1:1 device is 256GB and then for shared devices they are mixed with 256/512Gb. I think only a handful of times we've come across disk space issues on the 256 devices and that is the profile clean-up policy wasn't applying correctly.

 

However, we do also try and reimage our devices (particularly shared devices) every year or two.

If you're using the OneDrive sync app and teaching staff how to add shortcuts via the web UI, then as long as you configure Storage Sense to clear cached files when disk space gets low, you should be fine with 256 or 512GB.

 

If you're not using the sync app, and are either using Cloud Drive Mapper or the web UI, then storage likely won't be an issue at all provided you have the usual profile clearing settings enabled.

128Gb for a 1:1 teacher (windows or mac) device is too small. It might *just* be enough for a student not doing any creative "multi-media" work.

 

256 is fine for a 1:1 teacher device in almost all cases. Photography and Media Teachers need more.

 

Shared Devices, 256 is fine with intune shared user with local onedrive policy. If these shared devices are ever used by media heavy classes, then 512Gb is essential.

 

Shared Devices with 128Gb is fine *if* you have no locally installed apps, and the intune shared users policy  (the one that disables one drive and encourages apps to prefer cloud storage). This is a "Chromebook-like" device set up, and nothing like a traditional PC Lab, so make sure to manage users expectations.
