Papercut - logging in at a printer

Hi all

 

Currently staff just send to print and collect but this is causing unnecessary waste, higher costs etc. 

 

I am wanting them to log in at the printers via papercut and release jobs, choose cost centre etc

 

Is it worth just generating a pin for them or is it worth going down the card reader route? We don't have card access doors so they would just be used for printing for now.

 

Just wondering how your staff reacted and coped with logging into printers for either of these methods. I did try it via the PC client but had inconsistent results.

If they don't already have NFC fobs, a PIN is probably the easier route, and still quicker than entering their AD/Entra username & password on a touchscreen.

 

If you roll out access control or fire register with key fobs or ID badges, you could easily add that later.

Personally I'd push for ID cards, as PINs can be more easily forgotten or found out by students, so you'll be forever needing to change them. And if you've already got cards then there's a lower barrier to entry for using them for other things.

 

Generally, we didn't get much/any pushback from staff when we moved to print release, but we did it while rolling out central copiers across the school so for a lot of staff it was more convenient. And staff already had mifare IDs for door access.

Not had Cannon printers before, but we've had the RFIdeas WaveID readers work with Ricoh, Sharp and Kyocera in the past.

If your printers have readers already and cards aren't on the to-do list you can get sticky mifare tags cheaply from amazon which you can stick to their existing ID badges or something.

Run Ricoh's here with Papercut MF for the last 11 years. IMC5500's and MPC307's currently all via Mifare Card/Stickers on ID cards (staff only, students get the good old HP fleet) The option to login manually via the copier is there as well. 

 

Works really well, admittedly I do it all via the framework so the copiers come with the readers pre installed and configured. If your devices are on contract I would speak to them in the first instance.
