please could someone answer this simple question (well not for me). What is a vanilla network?

I thought it maybe something like this. I guess I am moving that way as I want to get rid of our CSE management system and have control of my policies, etc. Too many problems, would love to go back to a simple (ish) system without too much interference.

I run a combination of server 2k3, 2k8, ranger and abtutor.

 

I have all the ranger policies turned off though and use group policy instead. The account manager, quota checker, title checker and a few other features are all good, I'm just not sure if it's worth the money - ABTutor definitely is though.

Yeh no need for expensive complicated middleware these days, Microsoft has done a great job with policies and restrictions.

 

I've moved away from Akhter Interjigsaw and simply use it for batch imports of new students these days, nothing more.

 

Our network has never been safer or more resilient.

Vanilla isn't a product. It's just technician's slang for the basic Windows Server operating system which you purchase from a Microsoft reseller

I'm not really sure you understand what the term 'vanilla' means in this context. You don't purchase Vanilla, if you have windows with no addon's then you are Vanilla. 'Vanilla for VMware' is just therefore VMware.

Well done on reviving a very old post.

However in answer to your question, "Vanilla" is just a standard installation of operating system. The world's most popular free OS | Ubuntu has some nice downloads you can run on your VM for free, otherwise if you wanted a Windows based VM then you need to purchase one though a reseller.
