uBlock Origin Lite or Adblockers

Just deploying uBlock Origin Lite currently in beta but on Monday will be in production, any sites you allowed?

 

The setup (done through GPO).

• Path: User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Google > Google Chrome > Extensions > Configure the list of force-installed apps and extensions > Enabled.

• Path: User Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings > Registry (2 Update items)

noFiltering - REG_SZ - ["url.com","url2.com"]

 

I am interested to see what do for adblocking do you use adblockers like this or PiHole/Technitium etc...

I use Pi-hole, you can download raspberry pi os and running it in a VM and install Pi hole, have the traffic from the DNS server routed to the Pi hole and through our filtering

have you got two pihole VMs? I saw the technitium is more suitable for enterprise rather than PiHole. whats your student count? mines around 1400.

I have tried pihole you can run through ubuntu server but wasnt too keen on having it on a VM incase of any outages.

our school is about 650 i think, not had any issues with VMs, i just have the one Pi Hole VM, its low hardware requirements.  i've not come accross technitium

thanks for posting, Technitium is free and more suitable for commercial use with DNS condiitonal forwaading etc... apparently but havent used to be honest.

 

Would you not want a second incase this one goes down? seems a bit risky if it was me lol!

Another possibility if that if you have existing filtering in place you can upload lists of advertising sites to it.

PiHole have lists of known URLs that can be automatically updated, I have over 1.5million altogether. You can even apply groups and get these applied to different IP addresses.

 

I'd defo have 2 PiHoles, not much more admin. There are ways to sync them too although never done this myself.

I have the Privacy and Ad Block categories on our filter turned on for all users.  They do a reasonable job, but I have quite a lot of additions to them.

I found our ISPs privacy and adblocking category to be lacking, so added the same lists that pihole uses as well.

Do you use smoothwall for filtering on top?

is that your public DNS servers your using or does your ISP do filtering as well?

Ah LGfL how is that? To be honest there not really there to block ADs and the other wonders an adblock does same as other companies like smoothwall etc... even security i think. core focus is child protection like adult content, gambling etc...

As you say, they're not there to block ads, but you can add lists of ad sites to it to achieve the same outcome. They're okay for everything else.

I only use it at home, we have not crossed enough to implement that at work yet because all our students are over 18. Any guests under 18 the organizers have to get a signed disclaimer.

 

I have worked at a few schools and colleges though where we had filtering, from dedicated appliances to integrated with firewalls.
