Using Starlink as a Backup Internet Connection

Hi all,

 

We’re a rural prep school where a second physical fibre circuit isn’t feasible, so we’re looking at Starlink as a backup internet connection.

 

If anyone is currently using Starlink (or has done so recently), I’d be interested in real-world feedback on:

• Reliability (noting this may be location-dependent)
• How helpful Starlink support is when issues arise

 

This would be backup only, not a primary connection.

We use it as backup internet for some of our schools. Never had an issue with reliability on the Local Priority 50GB plan. As a test, we ran a school on it for a day and no one noticed a difference over FTTP. Can't comment on support as we have never needed it.

Starlink is great. We've dozens of schools using it.

 

We can supply schools with Satellite connections and csn even failover your main lines ip addresses too.

Starlink is a great backup (and primary in the right places).  My only caution would be that as you have to pay for throughput you need to be careful with your commit and then usage.  It's expensive to top-up by 50GB compared with comitting so if its a 1:1 school then I would suggest doing some bandwidth monitoring for an average day and see how much throughput you do.  We had a school do 25GB in 30 minutes of outage.

We are just setting up our backup line now but they want a credit card on the main site.

Just a fair warning for Starlink, as its Sat-based and depending on what plan you use, you won't have a proper fixed Public IP and be subject to CGNAT. If any of your systems require a fixed Public IP you may have trouble.
