IT asset management software

Hi I am looking to move away from our current IT asset management system IRIS and explore alternative solutions that others are using. One feature we find particularly useful is the ability to use QR codes on mobile devices, so I’d be interested in options that support something similar.

Civicas Parago, or self hosted Snipe-IT.

Second Snipe-IT. We pay for the hosting to make life a little easier, and it's well worth the money.

I've never set up anything like Snipe-IT before but it was an absolute breeze on one of our on-prem Windows servers, really happy with how it's come out, so we are self-hosting. Obviously we are among the many who are moving away from on-prem, generally, but going down to 1 server it will be something we can keep going without the need to pay for hosting. If it's not expensive then the way Snipe-IT works is definitely worth it. It's made life much easier. I remembered it well from my work at another school that used it years ago, and it has only improved since, so it was a total no-brainer to go for it now.

Long time user of GLPI here (self-hosted) and I love it. I don't know if Snipe-IT has an agent or any network discovery features, but GLPI's agent is really good. All the computers will peridocially report all their inventory data (hardware components, firmware versions, OS build details, installed software) which has become central to managing the fleet (which computers are behind on monthlies, which are still running older versions of an app, etc.)

 

It can also do scheduled inventories over the networok of printers, switches, etc. to keep details of those up to date as well.

 

Doesn't get much love on here, but once set up it's a beast.

If we were staying on MS, I would be really interested in GLPI by the sound of it!

Does it allow you to check-in / check out devices? We use Snipe-It for loaning out devices, which is very quick and simple. GLPI looks really interesting, and could be a single replacement for all my seperate Helpdesk/Asset Scanning/Snipe-IT systems.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have been looking into the spiceworks device inventory, it looks like it gathers all the Service tag info applications etc too. Has anyone used this for IT asset managment?

When I came in, our MSP (who still does our annual asset audit and serves as 2nd-line IT support on a remote-only contract) was already using Parago (now Civica EdOps) before we had in-house IT, and we still use it today.

 

Their public roadmap on their ideas portal shows that they're doing an overhaul of the UI soon to match other Civica products, followed by a refresh of the Helpdesk feature to fix the various issues reported by users. My only complaint is that they recently redid the mobile app, and it's now really slow to load anything - it used to be a native app that cached everything locally for you to upload later (so you're not relying on signal everywhere in the building), now it feels like it's web-based and the asset list either doesn't load or takes an age to do so.

 

EdOps also serves as a full premises management system, so can also be used by the site team for tracking contracts and compliance checks, and assets can have attachments on them, so I've started uploading scans of loan agreements in case the paper copy ever gets lost.

Kinda. You can make items available for reservation (https://help.glpi-project.org/documentation/modules/tools/reservations), effectively allowing you to mark it as assigned to a particular person for a particular period of time. That's more intended to allow you to make a pool of devices available for people to book out ahead of time.

Alternatively, you can just assign an item to a user more directly, which is probably more suited to teacher laptop assignments or other long-term, indefinite assignments to individuals.

 

For temporary, ad-hoc loans of spare computers, chargers, etc. I made my own thing in Google AppSheet that also updates items in GLPI via its API.

We use Microsoft Lists, works great and you can even have an image of each machine. Use the asset templates to get started.

I have just had a quick look and the Microsoft List view looks like a really simple solution. Thanks for all the advise.
