nicholab Posted December 17, 2025 Posted December 17, 2025 Hi my wife wants us to get a Skylight Digital Calendar is it any good and why is it better than other options?

Other options I can think of: A Raspberry Pi mounted on the back of a small touch screen. Hardware cost probably not actually that different. You can set up / configure / write the software however you want, but it does mean you've got to spend time / effort on it. A full-flip laptop / Chromebook in "tent" mode. Might be free / cheaper if you get a pre-used one. If a Chromebook, then you'd need to be able to set it to act as a kiosk, which requires (I think) a Google Workspace setup and an appropriate license for the device. Might be useful if you want to look at how to do ChromeOS kiosk devices, might be a bit much otherwise. If you can get a device you can install Linux on (some Chromebooks, possibly) you can configure a kiosk setup yourself, although again if you've not done that sort of thing before you'll need to spend some time figuring it out.
jthompson Posted December 17, 2025 Posted December 17, 2025 No experience with it, but I'm someone who bought a Pebble watch, so my initial thought is that it'll work nicely up until it doesn't (hardware support ends, company/app gets bought out or goes bust). If it were me, I'd be looking to recereate the core functionality using a combination of Google Calendar, Google Tasks and Google Keep. For the communal display, a budget Android tablet (or several) to surface those apps. Software support is less of a worry and the hardware can be swapped out or used for something else.
NegativeKillDeath Posted December 17, 2025 Posted December 17, 2025 Its a technical solution to the calendar hanging on the fridge of old. Except the tech solution is actually personal devices with synced calendars.

RobFuller Posted December 17, 2025 Posted December 17, 2025 I've been looking at one of these hardware wise, should tick some DIY options with PoE 😎 https://avpartsmaster.co.uk/interactive-solutions/iiyama-101-prolite-tw1023asc-b2p-touch-panel
