Chrome for Education Admin- Pricing

Hello,

 

Since everything is now cloud based, I have been asked to look into getting Chromebooks instead of Windows Laptops to refresh our fleet. I had a look around the Chrome Enterprise Admin centre, got a full trial license for 30 days and configured a few chromebooks. I am very happy with the functionality and how snappy they are. 

 

The Chrome Enterprise Upgrade costs £3.33 per device (per month) but I was wondering if there is an Educational discout for this? I had a quick google but got mixed results.

£3.33?? We typically pay £24 (few years ago they where around £15) per device for ChromeOS Upgrade Licences which is what you use to manage devices on the Google Admin Console. Lots of suppliers out there. Licence is for the lifetime of the device. You might be looking at the annual licence which I believe does not exist for Edu domains.

Sorry, it's £3.33 per month per device.

OK the typical price is around £24 per device for its lifetime. We use C-Learning for licenses - but there are lots of Google Partners who will supply these and add to your Workspace domain.

That's amazing- thanks a lot. This includes everything that the Enterprise license has? It's just cheaper and called Education?

In my experience, the licenses have always just been named "Chrome Enterprise Upgrade" and have been a one-off puchase for the life of a device (of around £20-30).

 

Looking in my Workspace Admin now, I can see that that has now maybe changed to a new model.

 

Our existing licenses are now listed unter a heading of "Chrome Enterprise/Education Upgrade (Standalone, perpetual)", which is the first time I've seen 'Education' in the naming of them.

 

There also now appears to be another section alongside that named "Chrome Enterprise upgrade (Standalone, fixed-term renewable plan)", which could be the new way of selling licenses now? Your quoted price of £3.33 per device per month (£40 per device per year) tallies with https://chromeos.google/intl/en_uk/products/device-management/#action-quadrant-os-device-management which I'm assuming would be for that type. The perpetual option on that page might just be exactly what we've always been buying, but I can't tell just from that page whether or not there's some new mechanism at play there.

 

From Google's perspective, future price increases would apply to pre-existing licenses in a way that the perpetual licenses wouldn't, so super for them 😐

There are two potential elements to managing Chrome devices: Workspace (the MDM) and the device license.

 

In EDU Workspace is free at the basic level or £4.80/user/yr for the fancy level: https://edu.google.com/intl/ALL_uk/workspace-for-education/editions/compare-editions/

 

Device licenses are needed for Workspace and are around £25/device for the lifetime of the device. Only transferable to the same make/model.

 

I'm not sure if the latter is needed if you were to use a different MDM solution. Anyone know? I'm hoping not as we might have to repurpose a load of the pupil laptops as Chromebooks.

There has been a lot of licencing changes recently with the free tier being capped too. 

 

Ill try C Learning as I want to buy one or two licences to trial.

Chrome Education Licenses are perpetual and are £24 RRP for the life of a device.
