A Scary point now is that a lot of these can be hosted for free by any kid with a good technical knowledge, or the ability to read.

Which is enough for them to get on game sites / host games / social media bypasses.

I'd also image a lot of the gaming focused bypass sites are likely hosted by college students, its the kind of thing i would have done if i cared about playing games in school Hah.

I mean, fighting all censorship while balancing school/college/uni is probably a bit much, so I suspect they concentrate on the needs of their core user base. 😛

You're acting as though this is a new thing - it's not.  We've always had technical students testing limitations.

Were I a nation state, standing up a (good, fast, secure) proxy service on Github with a sprinkling of C&C in there wouldn't be a bad idea for some deniable actions.

They are funded by advertising.

Regardless of any the new domains popping up, much, but not all of the actual content is loaded from the same few CDNs and blocking them makes many games unplayable.

List to follow as I’m out this afternoon.

look at the GH profiles, (and the commit messages!) they're all teenagers... (Like the alleged people who took down M&S/Co-op)

I very much doubt there's any funding at all.

There's been a site dedicated to our school for years now. We keep an eye on it while appearing to be oblivious. Everybody uses it, so the kids don't need to wander off into the potentially darker/less well understood sites.  That said very occasionally we need to intervene and ask the student if I need to look into what they've been doing to find sites that I need to block - that keeps things in check.

Recently though its been a desire to get to the Generative AI sites that's fuelled a huge surge in kids using proxy-bypass sites - and consequently they have also moved away from the traditional bypass site they've been using for years. This has fueled complaints from staff that kids are all playing games, accessing in appropriate material. Absolute pain, we're now into the ever escalating efforts to restrict things while they look for ways to bypass them.

I'm looking forward to when we can light-up copilot/chat for students (September?) and hopefully they'll come back within the rails (as it were).
