I picked the Head of my governor school up on this the other day... I didn't mean to; it just happened ... He is a History teacher, so he should know!

I must admit that with this particular expression, I have got to the point of "meh, does it really matter?"

I'm like that with the use of "who/whom", and maybe a bit relaxed over Less/Fewer TBH

Less / fewer really bugs me still. Especially when you see it in professional print:

@witch . Maybe you should be in the "only slightly pedantic geek" group? . Less/fewer bugs me, but congratulations to Sainsbury's who (at least in our local branch) have a "10 items or fewer" till. (No congratulations to the idiots who seemingly can't count higher than 10).

I suppose it is just that certain things upset me more than others. ANYTHING that has been professionally printed, and presumably therefore paid for, which is grammatically incorrect drives me completely bonkers. I notice that "bored of" instead of "bored with" is now becoming acceptable usage in "quality" newspapers and other reporting.

Bill Bryson did say that language evolves and I have no issue with that - it is just plain laziness that annoys me

I spotted the GoT pedantry last week and almost punched the air. The fewer/less thing is one of my pet hates and I nearly always say "fewer", even if under my breath, when I hear "less" being misused.

I was part of a panel interviewing prospective Assistant Principals yesterday. The application we had from an English teacher was the worst written and spelled... she wasn't invited to interview.

Sadly, I have seen this often with younger teachers. We had a young NQT who did very well and after a couple of years moved on to head of English at a local school - her spelling and grammar was atrocious!

Someone my OH works with was complaining that you didn't actually see it - I find that deeply disturbing; the noise was almost too much for me!

Did they also complain about the body double in E10? Mme LeMarchand and I didn't even suspect that it was composited. But then, we weren't peering intently at NEKKID LADY!!!
