As the title says really...

 

I am thinking of getting the CCTV up and running in the new house, but wondering how to get the HDMI signal downstairs to a TV rather than having to open the phone app and squint at a tiny screen in the middle of the night when something goes bump...

 

In the old house I bashed a hole in the ceiling and pulled the cable down (in trunking) to a wall mounted TV in the bedroom, which I could quickly bring out of standby to see if anything was going on which required me to rush downstairs baseball bat in hand...

 

I don't really want to start bashing holes in the new house (just yet), so wondered what were the best ways of achieving this wirelessly.

Assuming the hdmi out is from the NVR? Could you not just put the NVR under the TV?

You can get wireless HDMI transmitter/receiver kits. Never used one, but there are a few 4+ star ones on Amazon. Most look like they need USB for power.

 

Depending on how big you need the screen, a tablet + the app might be another option. If you're lucky and your TV is connected to the network you might be able to cast from your phone to your TV.

 

Come to think of it, can you get the app on your TV? If not, how about on an Android box?

It depends on the NVR you're using.

 

With certain manufacturers, you could use a Firestick (for example), side load the APK (i.e HikConnect for Hikvision) & then you get the App on your TV.

 

If you go UniFi, Protect has an Apple TV app. Both options work on WiFi.

 

If you were going to run Ethernet in the future, HDbitT is your best bet (I've used IP versions & the 'straight' Point to Point patch).

I have done this with my CCTV using a DVB modulator, it takes the HDMI output of my DVR and encodes/injects it into the aerial cable so the CCTV just shows up as another TV channel in the guide. I can watch it on any TV in the house by just changing channel.

Raspberry Pi on the TV, as I guess the CCTV already has wifi for your phone.

You might well be able to fish the HDMI lead down the wall behind the plasterboard and pop it out through a hole lower down.

 

Easier said than done though (but if you've got a friendly electricican that does that stuff all day they could probably do it in 15 mins.)
