NEC Phone systems - no longer part of the EU market

This has come as a bit of a shock to us as most of our schools run NEC phone systems.

 

Long and short of it is:

 

• NEC will not accept any new Purchase Orders received after 31st December 2024, nor will we enter into any new commitments/renewals/extensions after that date;

• NEC will not accept any new Purchase Orders with a scheduled or expected delivery date after 31st March 2025; and

• NEC will also not provide any hardware and/or software support services beyond 31st March 2026 except for any existing contractual obligations.

 

If your phone system fails, you basically have to purchase a different phone system as the main phone system cannot be ported over to a secondhand system.

Yeah they announced this in April, they're EOL'ing on-prem systems and focusing on cloud systems instead. Panasonic and Toshiba did the same a few years ago. Edited December 6, 2024 by cnewstead

Just switch to freepbx, it's so easy I forget it's running most of the time

All in all a great reason for schools to never consider purchasing an NEC phone system ever again.

I rather like ours, but it’s going to have rather a short life compared to the Nortel system it replaced (which lasted for over 20 years).

 

Wonder what’ll happen when I ask our support to fit an IP card for the PSTN switch-off?

If i had a bit more of an idea about installing phone systems I think I would but for now my knowledge is mainly managing / supporting an on-prem iPECS and BT Cloud Work system.

I don’t know about you, but phone systems are one area where I truly treasure my ignorance of them, along with SIMS and finance systems

They are fairly simple to be honest to get a basic system running, if I am honest with you cloud based is the way to go I think, bit like Exchange servers I think, something you could do without the headache of.

 

I'd happily host and run out own phone system but it becomes a full time job if your not careful I think.

Yeah, as a trust of 12 sites with the view to expand, we are looking at a trust cloud phone system as the end goal but got to decide what to do in the short term with regards thr NEC sites - something no one has budgetted for.

I try to stay away from them as they all have different terminology. Like the LG iPECS system, their menu labels just don't make any sense! Yet the BT Cloud Work system was a doddle to configure.

They're just computers, they have an ip and boot via a config file, you create extensions and map them to phones, and then pay someone for a trunk to connect them to ye olde telephone network instead of just calling [email protected] because still having phone numbers is apparently a thing
