365 Tenancy Migration questions

Hello.

 

Got a bunch of schools we support all just joined a MAT so plan is to get them all on a single domain to move them to a single tenancy

 

We got quite a few tools we got in mind so will be looking to explore these soon however though

 

We have one School which are using RM Unify (That 365 Federated System)

Another school which are using Hybrid (OnPrem AD > Sync back to 365)

Each school are on its own seperate Domain (both tenancy and Local Active directory)

 

Can anyone see any issues doing the migration with a hybrid setup and RM Unify

 

For now we just want to get them all to the new tenancy and get them to start using the MAT new email address..the school that has a hybrid setup will want to keep it this way (I'm assuming on their AD we will just need to reconfigure the ADSync tool to point to the new server and add a UPN Suffix?)

 

I'm i right in saying as well once we move all the accounts over Email passwords will be changed? or when doing the migration it retains the existing Passwords of the mailboxes? Likewise with 2FA will they all need to be reset again?

You could consider pre-creating the users from CSV and then mapping their old identities to their new ones in the migration tools?

Consider if you do want to merge all the schools into a single tenancy given MS's plans to reduce the "free" storage available to schools to 100TB per tenancy + 50gb/100gb per A3/A5 license. (unless this got scrapped and I didn't notice, in which case ignore me)

Further to @rob-d's comment, look at multi tenancy organisations. They are a lot more useful than they were a couple of years ago.

 

I think you might end up with the storage allowance per school and be able to provide full access to resources in all the tenancies.

What is the experience like wit these multi-tenants?

 

Is it as seamless as being in the same tenant?

We setup the Multi Tenancy Organisation for our 7 schools back in the summer holidays as we logistically don't have the time to migrate all the schools to a new single domain/tenancy.

 

The MTO allows for easier sharing of resources and communications as users are created as members in all the other linked organisations so is a good compromise.

As others have said, I'd look at MTO. I think this will only become more useful as there are several business segments that Microsoft serve that run on acquisitions - my employer is one of those in fact - and there's a good roadmap for MTO last time I checked as Microsoft have finally accepted that there are good reasons for businesses to be related but not necessarily fully integrated.

 

If you do want to do a full merge/integration then you need to decide which tenant is going to be the 'home' tenant. It might be one you already have for the MAT or if you don't have one for just the MAT. This needs a bit of thought - if all you have are schools with their own tenant at the moment, don't simply assume you can or should fold smaller schools into the bigger school's tenant as there may be technical limitations to that and there will almost certainly be political implications, right?

 

And, without wishing to be rude, statements like the two below really make me think you will need help from an expereienced O365 consultant rather than trying to do this in-house - it feels like you have several fundamental misconceptions about how Entra ID and Office 365 work.
