Alternatives to Clickview

Good morning,

 

 

I hope you all are well.

 

 

ClickView is up for renewal, and I’m wondering if there are suitable alternatives available. The cost of ClickView doesn’t seem to justify the renewal, given how infrequently it is being used.

Planet eStream is the digital successor to the old TV and VHS in the corner. Though it looks like they have had a rebrand into just eStream. It allows recording from freeview broadcast, as well as uploading your own resources. If one person has recorded something, then everyone has access to it. You also get 30 days back recording and a whole host of other content. Not cheap, but I seem to remember it was cheaper than ClickView.

 

They have been bought out by UniGuest since I last used them so I cannot comment on how the company is now. Used to be very responsive and friendly.

Be aware that if teachers have put time and effort into creating/linking/basing work on Clickview and you move away, you will lose friends...

 

For anyone who's cancelled their Clickview subscription is there any method of exporting the videos/recording stored in your library to another system?

 

Or is moving away from Clickview effectively accepting you're going to lose any existing videos teachers are using?

Things may have changed with the move to the Cloud... I used to (10+ years ago) Admin our CV account, and when I checked - no.

Can I check if cost vs usage is the only driving factor in this move? We are just looking at Clickview as a possible option, cost doesn't seem too bad for a primary school, want to make sure there aren't major issues with it making you look elsewhere too?

It's primarily just cost that was making us consider moving. Clickview have increased our annual subscription by an order of magnitude this year (~50% IIRC) which prompted us to look at alternatives.

Has anyone looked at Planet eStream recently? How does it compare cost-wise with Clickview?

 

Are there any other alternatives with considering?

We just moved away from Planet Estream. They got taken over by some American company and didn't have any of the same staff that I could see who used to be great.

 

Its a nice system but in my opinion legacy now that SharePoint can host video for free very easily.

 

We migrated all our resources to SharePoint Stream using the direct download link content options. Some lacked a little quality but nothing too bad.

 

I don't personally see the point in paying for video hosting these days.

 

EDIT: Just to say Stream has some pretty cool AI features such as auto generation of subtitles and other cool stuff like chapters now. Its quite good actually.

I'd agree about it not being worth paying to host video content given the alternatives available. The key aspect of Clickview I do like is how easy it makes recording freeview programmes. We haven't found any other services which provide the same level of functionality/flexibility when it comes to staff being able to easily edit/cut and store programmes from Freeview channels.

 

Do you still have a method of recording programmes from UK Freeview if staff request any are added to SharePoint Stream?

Yes we just rip from iPlayer or YouTube usually. We also have a piece of software that can capture DVD's or Blurays.

 

Very rare staff ask for anything else than those.

 

Obviously we block any "broadcasting" of the videos outside of our network as well.

 

We do pay for a small Vimeo sub for anything that needs to be public facing such as messages to parents etc.

That's another thing I appreciated about Clickview in that it reduced the need for awkward conversations with staff about acquiring content from iplayer/Youtube or converting DVDs! I think it would be a real downgrade for staff if we had to go back to them asking us to manually record programmes from Freeview.

 

There's definitely a need for a service that can record/store the programmes for us and let staff download them after broadcast.

Never used Clickview, but we use eStream. Teachers love it, MFL, English and humanities have built up quite the resource archive! We pay £3K per year for the cloud hosted version, that's for the basic media library, TV recording module that has the BBC digital archive and allows recording up to 30 days prior, then finally the digital signage module. For those that have transitioned from ClickView to something else, do ClickView provide you with your library content back in a straightforward, convenient way, or is it down to schools to download their material manually from the site? PM if you prefer.
