Seems to happen overnight e.g. when not plugged in to charger

BIOS "resets", e.g. both TPM and UEFI get disabled and so it won't

boot until you go back into BIOS and re-enable.

 

The main battery is fine. Do laptops have some type of CMOS battery to maintain BIOS?

I took the back off but couldn't see anything that looked like a CR2032 I could replace ?!

It's a very old stone NT310-H model.

I'm pretty sure it will have a BIOS battery , sometimes they area bit tricky to spot as they can be tucked away behind other components . Google laptop BIOS battery and look at the images . It might help you spot it

I have a very old desktop that won't keep bios settings even after replacing the CMOS battery, there are a few caps bulging so I think that whole subsystem is kaput lol!

 

Also quite a few of the older style laptops had batteries that for some reason were hidden and require the laptop being pulled apart, I had one that needed the top off not the bottom.... Hope you don't get the soldered cable/heatwrap version... what a pain!

It is a soldered one, as you'd need to solder the existing wiring connector onto the new cell.

 

how do you know are you looking at the motherboard manual ?

Are you sure you want to muck about with soldering/attaching wires to a new battery, when you can buy them pre-fitted? Most laptop CMOS batteries I've replaced you can buy the battery with wires connected as one piece, ready to plug in to the mobo.

Most PC's have a CMOS battery on the motherboard, but I believe a lot of newer laptops now use the main battery to maintain their CMOS settings. Only way to be sure is to check the motherboard - if it has a CMOS battery it will look like the following;

Are you sure it's soldered to the motherboard as from the looks of it, its has two wires with a plug on the end so you just unplug it and replace it with a new one?

 

A lot of old laptops have this way of installing a CMOS battery. If it's soldered to the motherboard then it's likely to be a recharchable Varta battery but that's a really, really old way of doing it.

Not soldered to the motherboard, soldered to the connector (just the wires and a little plug). Getting another one of those connectors would be a pain, but the battery is standard. You could also stick the connectors with conductive tape.

I've used conductive tape in the past to do that, the connector are actually a standard sort of connector but for the life of me I cannot recall the name of them as I purchased a few of them from Aliexpress for personal use a few years back. If you look on eBay and even Amazon you can find quite a lot of people on there selling them.

 

I thought they were soldered to the battery too but after learning the hard way (the battery shot across the room at 200MPH!!) they are actually spot welded to the battery but a spot welder from the likes of CPC or RS Components is a few hundred quid and conductuve tape and some heat shring tubing is a lot less money so I do it that way instead! I think I did a YouTube video on me using the tape if I remember correctly.
