Recommend me some patching/asset management software. I've just had a demo with Heimdal, just wondering what other options are about & what others are using in Education. I've heard that PDQ deploy is good.

Endpoints / Servers combined we're looking at around 400 devices in total

What do you want it to do?

report on system specs (cpu, ram, storage,os version, last logins etc..)

report on installed software, ability to push out software updates / install software - ideally cloud based but on prem hosted is fine too

Action1 gets mentioned quite a bit here. There is also patchmypc but not sure if that does system specs. PDQ inventry/deploy/connect might also work for you.

PDQ Deploy we use. Brilliant solution, and we barely scratching the surface on it. For Asset Management we use SnipeIT but we do utilise PDQ Inventory (which comes with Deploy) to pull system specifications to input into SnipeIT.

GLPI seems best at recording that data

I can see that one computer still has vlc 3.0.18

For updates I just use the choco package manager. Script downloads new versions and uploads to local repo. Client devices run choco update all on a schedule and download new versions

We use Panda Adaptive Defence that does patching, shows system specs but it does more than that as it's what we use for Endpoint Protection to prevent Ransomware from spreading on our network.

I've sorted down to two - it's between Action1 & Heimdal. Both seem to be very similar

Can I ask which solution your chose? Action1 is great, and very generous on the 200 free licenses, but pricing after that goes through the roof. Heimdal is cheaper but, I think, a bit harder to use than Action1. I've had a demo of PDQ Deploy, and that looks really good. Plus, being only a single Admin, the price seems very reasonable?

Ended up going for Action1. It was a hard choice between that and PDQ however.

Have been happy with Action1 so far, not really any complaints

Have you contacted sales to discuss Educational pricing, contact sales form a school address to get that started, or just ask a rep if you already have one?

As well we have increased our free model now to 200 free endpoints and those stay free, so they will come of a purchase quantity if you need to scale past 200.

So if you like Action1 but are favoring another comparable solution due to price, please let someone assist you with that

If I can be of any assistance there just let me know.

Many thanks.

Yes, I've been in conversation with an Action1 representative. Being a single admin, the PDQ price of $1,575 per year will make it very hard to beat. I've asked them for a trial to see how it compares. I really like Action1 and will likely keep it for our servers if I do decide on another solution. I've a trial of Heimdal but I'm not finding it as flexible, or as easy to use, as Action1. It's a lot cheaper, though.
