Hi there,

Not sure how best I approach this.

We have a Windows Server 2022 system however we have recently converted our systems to Intune.

A large number of systems were donated to the school by a public body. I am finding that gradually then systems donated are saying they don't have a Windows licence.

In the past, I have used Volume Activation Tools on the server, however this was always done using Active Directory-Based Activation.

Can anyone suggest the best way forwards now for these systems?

Although we have Server 2022, it is only servicing DHCP and DNS requests, it is not joined to the Intune tenancy.

It will take me such a long time to physically visit each affected station so looking for the best way to get these to pick up the Windows licences we have. N.B. we are fully licenced for Windows 10 and 11 and I have the activation keys on Microsoft Admin Centre.

Thanks in advance.

Quite new to InTune myself, but can you use:

Configuration > New Policy > Template > Edition Upgrade and Mode Switch

It lets you switch to Education Edition, and put in a MAK key.

Thanks, if I used this, what might it do to Windows 10 stations? I am worried it might try and upgrade them but anything that is currently 10, is not able to take 11 here.

It wont auto upgrade if you have a target edition set, plus if the machine is not compatible it wont matter anyway.

Windows 10 keys are the same as 11 & vice versa

Would subscription based activation not be the best way forward, as long as all your users have A3 licence

Yes but sadly the school, doesn’t have the cash for A3 so only teaching staff have A3, everyone else has A1. It is a nightmare as non-teaching staff have to use online Word & Excel for example. Lots of them are really struggling and there has been no time or budget to show them how to use it.

If they open the Office versions installed on the stations, it will say they don’t have a licence. There are more non-teachers than teachers so it just wouldn’t work unless they all had A3 as you say.

I am trying my best to get all users on A3 but keep being told there just isn’t the money. It means teaching assistants for example are not able to make worksheets etc for kids as they just don’t know what they are doing as they are used to using Word on the PC. All this is doing is costing the kids as they are not getting the resources they need.

You should be able to get 365 apps for faculty for pennies through your Microsoft reseller. We paid 2pence per licence last year.

We're still on A1 for all staff & use that in conjunction with a mix of Office 2021 Pro & 365 Apps for Ent
