Sports hall exams

What do you do in your sports halls to provide information to students such as exam start time, finish time, extra time, centre number etc? we have been using a projector but it has become our job to make sure it is switched on and off and it is problematic because we often get called back several times during the day with a 5 minute workaround expected when there are issues with the projector, the laptop, the user, the software etc. I'm all for technology use but I think we are over reliant and making it over complicated. IMO you don't want any disruption in your exam spaces so as basic as possible should be the idea.

 

This all came about when we found out many students couldn't read analogue clocks so to provide a digital clock we projected one and opted to display all the extra information too but we rely on it and don't have a plan b.

 

It has been a problem now for years, I told them to go back to what they did before but they don't want to listen.

Every school I've worked with has just used a standard whiteboard.

 

The digital clock thing has wasted countless hours of our time and proved a real nuisance.

Using a projector which is usually a source of noise and heat, in a stuffy hall, is a bad plan. Too much to go wrong, issues with user error that are hard to fix in a quiet but stressful environment, disruption when you have to go there.

 

Whiteboard and a lovely big digital clock is more than enough.

This is yet another example of the problems prolific in the educational IT sector...

 

1) let's fix everything with IT..... Even when we don't need to

 

2) let's make something that's actually really simple, overcomplicated ...for no real tangible benefits

 

3) let's make 2 and 3 an I.T. problem, not an actual admin/teacher issue like it actually is

 

4) when 1 and 2 are in place, we'll leave IT support with the responsibility and blame them when it goes wrong

 

This kind of stuff really grinds my gears and along with the devaluing thread already here... actually devalues the skillset IT have and demonstrates why no IT person wants to keep working in schools

We’ve also recently had a score board installed which doubles as a clock

We setup a laptop with no sleep settings and signed into a guest account, connected to hall projector, displaying a spreadsheet with the different times which the exams officer updates. Apart from switching on the projector and laptop on in the morning we have nothing to do with it.

But it's got batteries.....which will somehow end up an IT responsibility....including IT getting blamed when someone can't switch it on, even when staff change their own batteries in remotes at home?

Can't ever go wrong with a whiteboard. Surely the invigilators should be doing that?
